March Reading Activities have begun!!
The students have a new Reading Response Log to keep track of the minutes they are reading. Today in class, we wrote one response as an example of the expectations. Students need to read for at least 30 minutes every day and write 6 responses each week. They need to keep track of pages and minutes. School wide our goal is to read at least 100,000 minutes!
The reading response Log should be neat and well written. I will accept all signed reading logs.
The first reading log is due on Monday, March 9!

Wow! That was a quick week. Next week, on Thursday, the students will take their social studies unit test. They have information now that they can use to practice. On Monday, we will complete a study guide to help.
On Friday, we will have a Valentines Day party but I am waiting to hear from Mr. Martin about the time. So for now, the students will exchange Valentines. They will need 19 cards that are not addressed to a particular student. Just have them write their name on the back and place in a blank envelope.
Once I know more, I will make a sign up for treats.

Hello Parents,
After more than 30 math lessons we are ready for the end of unit math test. The students have the review, their math notebook and their Learn workbook. They need to have the completed review on Monday so that we can check and review. This review looks exactly like the math assessment. each section has the same number and type of problems. They need the completed paper on Monday for math.
This week, for reading homework the students needed to read and write a response in their reading notebook. Only seven students did the homework! The rest of the class “left it at home,” or “forgot to do it”.
I am posting a picture of everything that should be written in their planner for this week. Please check your child’s planner to see if it matches. They have time every morning to write in planners so every planner should look like mine. This tool is so that you know what is happening in school and that the students remember what they need to do at home to be prepared for the next day.
PTA Cultural Night
River Oaks PTA will be hosting the first annual cultural night on April 16, 2020 from 5:30 – 7:30 pm and they need YOUR help! To make this an amazing and diverse event, they need to put our efforts together to create a memorable night for our students, families and staff. There will be FREE food, music and entertainment!
We want to create a gallery walk/exhibit showing different countries. Each family can create a display board, bring food and/or artifacts that represent a country and share its interesting cultural facts. You can even represent a country that you’re not from.
In addition, every grade level will be assigned a continent and every class will represent a country. Your child will be part of a class project in which they will conduct research and learn about the assigned country. Come see their work!
It doesn’t stop there! We will also have a fashion show where students and parents can show off the cultural wear. Clothing must be school appropriate.
But wait! Do you own instruments and want to sing/perform in front of the school to represent your country? Do you know how to do Henna Tattoos? Please call Ms. Sandi at 313-827-6750 for more information.
To participate in this event, please fill out the form coming home soon and return to the school by Friday January 24th. We will contact you on the phone number below for further questions.
We need parents to bring in food to taste from your country. Please help us to make this a great family event.
NWEA
Don’t forget, testing begins tomorrow. The students will take the reading test first. It is important to remind your child to take his or her time and focus. I will make sure they take breaks.
Please send a healthy snack to school with your child.
Happy New Year
Wow! Can’t believe it’s January 9 already. We have so much to accomplish before the end of the card marking on Friday, January 17.
NWEA: Winter NWEA testing will begin on Tuesday, January 14. Make sure your child gets a good night’s sleep and breakfast in the morning. We will begin at 9:00.
Reminders for the New Year
Homework:
All students have book bags and should be reading at least 30 minutes every day. The only way to be a better reader is to read!
Students have math homework every day unless it is written in their planner. For instance, tomorrow we will have a quiz and so the students will not have math homework for the weekend.
Classroom Behavior
In our class, we are reviewing the rules and expectations. This is always necessary after a long break. Several students are having a difficult time adjusting to the routine again and have been extremely off task or completely disruptive. Please speak with your child about the importance of working hard every day. I will be making parent phone calls and scheduling conferences if these behaviors continue.
Kleenex
At this time, we have no kleenex in the classroom. If you are able please send a box or two for the students to use.
Contest Winners: I will post winners tomorrow after our class meeting in the morning!! Several students worked really hard!
