Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. The healthy choices we make not only fuel our body for the day, but also fuel our brain. We know that kids learn better in school when they eat breakfast. Did you know cereal is the number one breakfast food for children? If you enjoy eating cereal, try something different by adding strawberries or bananas; incorporating more food groups to your meal. By eating a healthy breakfast, you give your brain the energy it needs to make good decisions throughout the school day.

Hello Nowlin Bandits! It is time for our next skating party at Lincoln Park Skate Center. The event will be from 6-8 on February 27th. Pre-sale sheets were sent home to lock in the $5.00 ticket price. Tickets at the door cost $7.00. Please return your presale sheet and the money to your classroom teacher by today and tickets will be delivered to your student to come home on the 27th. We can’t wait to see everyone there for a great time.

Thank you to all that participated in this years Jump Rope for Heart campaign. Nowlin raised a total of $1,340 as we raised awareness for healthy hearts through physically active lifestyles. Job well done to all those that participated!!!

Mini Martian Marathon is Coming!
Nowlin School is going to have a team for the Martian Kids Marathon at Dearborn’s Ford Field on Saturday, April 13th – Blue Wave 12:00 Start. Any and all interested students are welcome to join the Team! (This is a Fun run. When the race nears, I will give instructions on where to pick up race packets for your racer, which you will be able to do on race day at Ford Field or at the Dearborn Performing and Community Arts Center during the Martian Race Expo the day before the race.)
Here is the community wide discount code for any adults in the Nowlin Community who want to run a race of any distance on Race Day – 5k to 26.2 Marathon. The discount code for any adult to register for any race is “SCHOOLGROUP19”.
(The entire registration process is online; you will not need to send anything to school.)
Our Team is called the Nowlin Bandits. To register – go to this link: https://runningfitevents.redpodium.com/2019-martian-invasion-of-races and fill in your info and select: “I am here to register as a group leader or group participant” and then enter our Team Name: Nowlin Bandits and Password: bandits2019. Register by March 1st for the Discount. Race is $20.00.
The race entry will get you a race tee-shirt, a marathon finisher’s medal, and post-race food. It doesn’t matter how fast or slow you run or walk, if you finish the 1.2 mile race you get a medal.
When the kids register, I will give them a log book and tattoo while supplies last!
After you register the work begins, each child must log 25 miles from now until race day and they can do this by participating in any activities. A Marathon is 26.2 miles, so the kids will run 25 miles on their own and finish the last 1.2 with the all the people running the marathon and all the other kids running.
When logging miles, anything they do like attending Healthy Kids Club, playing basketball, running, soccer, jumping rope, gymnastics, karate, etc. will count as a mile for every 30 minutes of the activity. So if you play soccer for 1 hour you can log 2 miles on your running log.
If your child joins the Nowlin Runners on April 13th at Ford Field Dearborn, you will be required to stay with your runner before, after, and during the race. I will be at the race to cheer for them as they run and help organize everyone.

Calling all members of the Nowlin Community!! Come join in on the fun next Monday 2/11 from 6-8pm for Sciencepalooza. It is sure to be an action packed night full of educational games and fun – do not miss out!!

Don’t forget that in collaboration with the PTA, we are offering parent informational meetings every month. Our fifth parent involvement meeting will take place this Thursday, January 17, 2019 at 8:45am and at 3:45 pm in the media center. Our topic this meeting with be on parent talk. We look forward to seeing those who are able to attend!

All students will be receiving Jump Rope for Heart collection envelopes next week in their PE classes. This is a fun event that brings awareness to healthy hearts and healthy lifestyles. The Jump Rope for Heart program is totally optional, and the kids earn prizes for the money raised. We will be celebrating heart awareness and Jump Rope For Heart in PE class the week of February 11-14th. If your child is collecting donations for JRFH their envelopes and money is due on Monday February 11th. Thanks all!!!

Its time to start Nowlin’s second round of Healthy Kids Club sessions!! The club is free to all Nowlin Bandit’s and will run 8 weeks starting Jan 31st and ending March 28th. As in the Falls edition, grades 3 – 5th will meet on Tuesdays after school and grades K – 2nd will meet Thursdays after school. Each session will run from 3:35-4:20pm. Students participating will be provided a healthy snack prior to exercising. In addition, the club will cover numerous health tips and facts that lead to healthy lifestyles.
