At home learning

During the next 3 weeks, while we are not at school, I will be posting or messaging you daily with an activity you can do with your child (or even your older children as well). Some activities will be good for the whole class to work on while other activities will be specific to a goal we have for your child. Even though I am giving a new activity everyday, please go back and redo any activities that you and your child really liked or any activity that you think your child could use more practice with.

If you have ANY questions or comments PLEASE reach out to me. I am here to help you, your child, and your family! This is a very unique time and we are all trying our best to get through it but no one has to do it alone.

Structure is best for children, so while they are home with you for these next few weeks please try to have a daily schedule for the children to follow. I am sharing with you a sample schedule you could choose to follow or use it as a start to create your own.

A Message from the Principal regarding COVID-19

MARCH 12, 2020AMY MODICA

Dear Dearborn GSRP Families,

With the latest COVID-19 pandemic now infiltrating Michigan it is best we stick to the facts and don’t pay attention to all of the “false” news on social media, but instead educate ourselves and parents regarding the science behind the virus.  Please access the Wayne County Health Department at the following URL for the most up to date information:

https://www.waynecounty.com/departments/hhvs/wellness/novel-coronavirus-information.aspx

I also want to share the steps that we are continuing to take in each of the GSRP classrooms to support a healthy environment for our students.

  1. Our custodians will continue to clean and disinfect all surface areas including desks, tables, door handles, and other classroom items.
  2. We will have teachers serving the food to students during breakfast, lunch and snack. All food will be served by the teacher directly to the student for the time being.
  3. Students and staff continue to wash hands regularly throughout the day.

Good hygiene practices will help prevent the spread of COVID-19 and other respiratory diseases. Please follow these recommendations and encourage all family members to do the same.

  1. Stay home if you are sick, and advise others to do the same.
  2. Always cover coughs or sneezes with a tissue or sleeve.
  3. Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  4. Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands.
  5. Wash your hands often with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds. Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol if soap and warm water are not available.
  6. Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.

The following resources were shared by the district administration team to support parents in discussing COVID-19 with their children. Please click on the links below to review these documents.

Helping Children Cope with Stress due to the COVID-19 Outbreak

The health and safety of our students is always our first priority. We will continue to share information on the school blog as it becomes available. Additional information is also available on the district’s website.

Indoor Recess

We started our indoor recess choices today. Since it was raining and we weren’t able to go play outside, we stayed in and had some fun in the classroom and in the hallway. The children were able to ride on scooters in the hallway, walk on stomper cups in the classroom, jump through hula hoops or toss bean bags into hula hoops, and try to catch a ball in a cup. All children played in each area for a few minutes, then rotated to a new area to play in. Click on the link below to see the pictures.

Classroom Jobs

The children have started having jobs in the classroom. They get to choose a job from the following:

  • Message Board Helper: write on the message board
  • 5 Minute Clapper: tell everyone when there is 5 more minutes to play
  • Counter count how many children are here
  • Door Holder: hold the door for the class
  • Lights On/Off: turn the lights on and off
  • Line Leader: be the person at the front of the line
  • Sprayer: spray the table with the green bottle or the pink

The following picture is from the first day of jobs. Talk with your child about the jobs they have done in the classroom. Think of jobs they could have at home to be helpful.

Experimenting and Letters

This week the children experimented with paint inside bags. Each bag had two different colors of paint (yellow & red/blue & red/yellow & blue) and the children used their hands to mix the colors together. When the two colors mixed together a new color was made (orange/purple/green). We looked at the bags of mixed paint and talked about what new colors we saw in the bags.

The children also explored lines and curves and used them to make different letters and pictures. The children were able to make the letters J, F, R, P, O, S. They were also able to create people with heads, ears, mouths, and legs. Look at the pictures below to see all that the children were able to make.

Building Block Fun

The children really got into building with blocks this week. The children built castle and towers. Some chose to build together while others chose to build alone. They were so proud of their buildings that they asked to have their picture taken. Look at what they were able to build!

First Weeks of School

These past 2 weeks of school have flown by. The children have been learning a lot about the classroom, the routine, and the materials. The children have been eating breakfast, lunch, and snack while at school.

The children have been playing in the classroom as well as outside on the playground. They have played with play-doh and have listened to stories about Pete the Cat!

New to Our Classroom

During the past 2 weeks we have been introduced to new toys and learning experiences in our classroom.

The first one is a question of the day.  The children have been very interested in letters and letters in each others names, so our questions of the day have been ‘Do you have the letter ___ in your name?’  The children look at their name and see if the letter is in their name or not, they then place it in the yes or no column.  We then talk about whose names have that letter and whose names do not have that letter and if there are more children in the yes column or the no column.  See one of our charts in the picture below.

We added new hair salon toys to our house area.  We have an old hair straightener, an old curling iron, and empty hair spray bottles to pretend to do hair with.  We have empty nail polish bottles to pretend to paint nails.  The children have really enjoyed pretending with these items.

Lastly, stuffed animals were added to our book area.  These stuffed animals provide something for the children to read books with, it might be listening to reading or them reading to the stuffed animal.  It started with the bear Corduroy after reading that book in class and has moved onto more animals, like a monkey, a bunny, dogs and a duck.
