Investigation #4 – Weigh the Evidence

Good Afternoon,

I just posted an assignment for today and tomorrow (it is due MONDAY 4/27). The assignment is asking students to look back at the evidence the spent the last several days looking at to try to decide which sources are best to use for making a claim they might be considering. Next week students will be creating a CER- style assignment using the work they are completing today and tomorrow. More details about the CER will be posted on Monday, but rest assured it will be a bit different than normal due to the circumstances we all find ourselves in.

REMINDER- Google Meetings tomorrow for each class starting at 1pm and continuing every half hour. Detailed directions for joining and more information about the meetings can be found on the Google Classroom post from last week. To join, go to Google Classroom and use the link within each class at the correct time (if you show up early- it will not work).

Google Meet today at 2:00

Good Morning,

As mentioned earlier this week on the weekly calendar there will be a Google Meeting today at 2:00. The point of today’s Google Meeting is really just a check in with students and to answer any questions they might have. The instructions for joining are quite simple: Log into Google Meet using this link: meet.google.com and then enter the meeting code which is posted on the Google Classroom site under today’s instructions (this will be posted at around 1:30 pm). NOTE: you will only be able to access the Google Meet if you are logged in under a Dearborn Public Schools email address (your student username). If you have any questions, please let me know!

Investigation #4 Sources are posted to Google Classroom

Good Afternoon!

Today’s assignment is asking you to start looking through the FIVE sources that are included in the assignment and work through the questions for each one. It is connected to the central question: How did abolitionists think and act as they tried to end slavery? Each day over the next five school days you will be looking at a new source from an abolitionist. You should complete ONE reading per day (however- if you want to work ahead or on the weekend you are aloud to do so!). Below you will see some step-by-step directions that should be helpful for you each day that you work on the assignment.
STEP 1- open the slideshow titled “sources” and open to the source for the day (they are labeled by day)
STEP 2- Open the Google Doc titled: “Source Analysis” and go to the question section that is connected to the source you are reading for that day.
STEP 3- Read the source starting with the head-note and attribution and answer the questions about the head-note and attribution on the Google Doc
STEP 4- Read the actual source and answer the questions about the source on the Google Doc
When you answer the questions for each day you are done for the day (again you can keep working if you want to or save it for the next day).
WHEN you are done with ALL 5 sources then you are done and you should hit TURN IN on the assignment. The due date for the 5 sources to be completed is NEXT WEDNESDAY, April 22nd.

As always, if you have any questions please reach out through email!

Digital Learning Week of April 13th

Good Morning! I hope your spring break went well and was relaxing! Welcome back to now our FOURTH week of digital learning (I can’t believe it has really been that long). Going forward there will be a few changes to how assignments will be posted and graded. Some of those changes are not even 100% clear to me yet so I will not be able to share those details until later this week or possibly next week.

Digital Weekly Calendar

One change I can share now deals with how assignments will be posted. Starting this week there will be a weekly calendar for each grade level. I have the link for the 8th grade calendar posted below. Essentially, this calendar is a way to plan out the week and so that there can be a place to check in that is visible to parents and to students. Here is the link for the calendar: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1LAyCKO30bx35x09WrUVuMN4AyvLt53d0fOxs4g4GueI/edit?usp=sharing

Google Classroom- still the place to find assignments

I will still be posting all work through Google Classroom at this time. Students have been using this literally for years now and are usually able to navigate and find their work quite easily. Please remember to hit TURN-IN on any completed assignment. This shows me that the students has completed the work and that it is ready to be checked.

This weeks assignments: Investigation #4 Abolitionists posted to Google Classroom.

This week we will start an investigation where students will address the issue of abolition at the time prior to the Civil War. The content is a continuation of what we had been looking at prior to spring break. The goal for the assignment to have completed by the end of the day WEDNESDAY is to understand some of the background that will make the investigation more meaningful. There is a slideshow that you should read through and questions on a separate Google doc that should be completed along the way. Please be sure to check back Thursday as well for the next assignment connected to the investigation. Do not fell like you have to complete the assignment all in one sitting. Feel free to take a break!

If you have any questions or concerns, please let me know!

Assignment #6 is posted to Google Classroom- Abolitionist Frederick Douglass

Good Morning, I hope you are all doing well and that you are staying healthy and safe. The assignment posted to Google Classroom today is a reading about the life of Frederick Douglass. This is connected with the previous assignment as it introduced important reform movements of the 1800’s. Today’s reading should offer some unique insight into the institution of slavery and the movement to end it known as abolition. Please complete the assignment by Wednesday 4/1/20.

If you have any questions or concerns about the assignment please let me know.

Assignment #5- Reform Movements of the 1800’s Posted to Google Classroom

Good Afternoon,

I hope everyone is doing well and continues to use this time to enjoy your families but is also making time to continue learning! Many students have completed the online work I have posted and I have tried to give some simple feedback to each student on the first few assignments.

Today’s assignment is based on the reform movements of the 1800’s including abolition. This reform movement assignment is just the first in several that will focus on some of the particular reform movements mentioned in the article (think of this as a preview of the next few assignments that will go into more detail on a few of the movements). Please complete the assignment by Monday 3/30/20.

As always, if you have any questions let me know!

Assignment 4 Posted to Google Classroom

Good Morning!

I hope you are all doing well and that you are settling into this new (temporary) normal that we find ourselves. I have posted another assignment to Google Classroom. This assignment is about the Mexican-American War, which we talked about in class the day before school was closed. I was planning to do an adaptation of the assignment posted to Google Classroom the next day and finally had a chance to convert it to be more Google Classroom friendly. It should help students understand that the viewpoints on the war were varied and show some insight into those differing views.

Reminder: Gradebook closes this week.

This is a reminder that the end of card marking 3 is THIS Friday the 27th of March. As a reminder, any work that was due BEFORE the shut-down of the school on the 13th should be submitted digitally as soon as possible. If you completed the assignment online, email it directly to me OR attach it to Google Classroom and PLEASE EMAIL ME DIRECTLY so I know to go back and look for it. If you completed the work on paper, take a picture of it and either EMAIL me directly OR attach it to the post from Google Classroom and then EMAIL ME DIRECTLY! This is the best way to be sure that nothing gets missed in this strange situation.

As always, let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

Assignment 3- DUE Tuesday 3/24- Posted to Google Classroom

Good Morning,

I have posted the newest assignment to Google Classroom. This assignment is a map with a word bank and blanks to fill in based on the numbers on the map. This assignment will be due on Tuesday of next week.

What is going to happen with the work posted on Google Classroom?

I have received many questions from students about how the material posted to Google Classroom will be graded. I want to ensure everyone that if you are unable to complete the work because of access to the internet or other difficult factors there will not be a penalty to the current grade in the grade-book. We understand the unique nature of these times. However, I want to encourage you to complete as much of this as possible. NOTE: this paragraph has been edited to reflect recent direction from the Michigan Department of Education.

End of Card Marking 3

This is a reminder that the end of card marking 3 is next Friday the 27th of March.

I hope that everyone is doing well and that you are all continuing to learn and finding some time to have a little fun as you spend this time away from school. Try not to stress out about it all, we will get through it! Stay safe and stay healthy!

Assignment 2 posted in Google Classroom

Good Morning,

I hope the last few days has gone well for everyone and that all your loved ones are healthy! We have been trying to maintain a schedule here at our home, but have been flexible if things need to change. Having structure during this time is helpful but so is the occasional Madden tournament in the middle of the day!

That being said, a new assignment is posted on Google Classroom today for History. It is a review about the Gold Rush and there are 8 questions on a Google Doc. Students can highlight the answers for the multiple choice questions and there are also 2 questions that have a written response.

MISSING WORK

As a reminder, please encourage your child to complete any missing work from last week (or even before) digitally as soon as possible. It seems very likely that the report card grade for card marking 3 will based only on the material from before school was closed.

Please email me with any questions or concerns!
