Young Fives- Shapes are Every Where!
The Young Fives class has spent the last few weeks learning about shapes in art and in every day life. They spent time practicing coloring and tracing in shapes to lead up to the next weeks project: shape people. Then, students practiced cutting shapes out carefully and pasting them onto a scene. Afterwards, we reviewed shapes using building blocks. Everyone was given 10 minutes to just simply construct buildings and see how their blocks fit together. This lead to us playing the shape hunt game. I would call out a shape to the students and they would have to see if they could find the shape and hold it up for me from their blocks.
Kindergarten Name Mosaics
This week Kindergarten finished up their name mosaics. Each class was read the story “Too Much Glue” by Jason Lefebvre before starting the project in order to emphasize that glue must be used carefully. The activity helps students develop their fine motor skills by having to carefully adhere glue to the lines of their name using small paper squares. Students can use glue neatly and sparingly when adhering small paper shapes.
What does the fox say?
This past week first graders worked on an instructional step by step drawing of a fox. Before starting the drawing we watched and danced along to an animated version of “What does the fox say” by Ylvis. Afterwards, we discussed where do foxes live and what color is their fur. This lesson really helps to engage students through auditory, visual and kinesthetic instruction. Students can draw a fox using simple shapes as well as create a background.
