Hello Room 108 Families,
It was great to be back in school after so many days off! We learned so much this week and had a super fun adventure! I am so excited to share what we learned about this week! First, please see these important reminders:
Reminders…
- MASKS: Masks must be worn at all times on school property. Families, please make sure your child is wearing a mask as they enter school. Please make sure you are packing EXTRA MASKS in your child’s backpack! We do keep extra masks in the classroom, however, we do not want to accidentally run out of masks should a child need one. All adults must also wear masks when dropping off and picking up their children. Thank you all very much for your understanding, as this is a Dearborn Public Schools requirement.
- DROP OFF AND DISMISSAL: Preschool starts promptly at 8:15 AM. Dismissal is at 3:00 PM SHARP! If your child is going to be absent, you must call the classroom (313) 827-6575 or text me on Remind BEFORE school starts. Thank you all very much for your understanding and cooperation!
- WATER BOTTLES: Please make sure you are sending your child to school with a water bottle. We do not have a drinking fountain in the classroom, however, we can refill your child’s water bottle throughout the day.
What Did We Learn About This Week?
Letter P was our letter this week. At morning message we talked about words that start with P (pigs, Play-Doh, pear, pink, purple, puzzle, etc.). We practiced making letter P with Play-Doh. What do you have in your house that starts with letter P? I encourage you and your child to find as many things in your house that starts with letter P!
We continued our LEGO STEAM exploration this week in our small groups. We continued to talk about transportation by focusing on how mail is transported. We talked about mail trucks and Amazon trucks. We talked about how the mail people pick up the mail and deliver it to people’s houses. The students built different types of transportation vehicles and delivered mail.
We had such a great time on our field trip to the mailbox! As we walked, we talked about the different types of transportation vehicles we saw. We also saw some trucks making deliveries to businesses! We tried to look for a mail truck, but we sadly didn’t see it. Oh well! When we got to the mailbox, the students were so excited to put their letters inside it! Families – keep checking your mail this weekend (possibly Monday) for a special surprise!
Next Week at Salina…

Friendship Day
We are celebrating a Friendship Day on Monday, February 14! The students have been working hard at making friendship cards. They will be passing out their cards to their friends on Monday.
If you would like to send your child to school with extra cards to pass out, you can. If you choose to, no food/candy may be passed out; we have food allergies in the classroom. Just to clarify, you do not have to send your child to school with cards, but you can if you would like to!
101th Day of School
Salina Elementary is celebrating the 101th Day of School on Monday, February 14! To be silly, your child can dress up like they are 101 years old! Just to clarify, you do not have to do this! It is simply a silly thing to do to celebrate 101 days of school.
Parent Meeting: Thursday, February 17

Our next Parent Meeting is on Thursday, February 17 on Zoom. THERE IS NO SCHOOL THIS DAY. A sign up sheet will be available on Monday, February 14. There are two times to pick from: 8:45-9:15 and 9:30-10:00. Please make sure your child is with you for this meeting. Materials for this meeting will be passed out next week. DO NOT LET YOUR CHILD USE THE MATERIALS UNTIL OUR PARENT MEETING!
What is Huggy Wuggy? What You Need to Know…
As the years progress, technology and screen time is more widely available. It is easy to be entertained by virtual activities, such as YouTube, TikTok, TV shows, video games, learning apps, etc. It is just as easy for young children to gain access to these types of screen time. It is EXTREMELY important to monitor how much screen time you give your child AND what you are allowing them to see.
A violent video game, Poppy Playtime by MOB Games, has started to become popular among young children. Following this, a popular character in the game, Huggy Wuggy, has been catching the eyes of parents and children. This video game is EXTREMELY inappropriate and displays violent and aggressive activities. This has not been an issue in our classroom, however, I want to bring it to your attention so you are aware and can monitor this closely at home.
Please always monitor what your child is accessing on the computer, tablet, or phone. Certain apps, videos, and/or video games can be violent and harmful to your child’s development. It is very easy for your child to click on an app and watch something they are not supposed to. Here are some ideas to help you support your child’s healthy screen time:
- Limit your child’s screen time to 1 hour a day.
- Sit with your child while they are using their tablet and/or watching TV.
- Check with your cable/internet provider of parental blocks to specific TV shows or apps.
- Research and download child-friendly learning apps (ABC Mouse, Starfall, YouTube Kids, etc.)
For more information about this game and what you can do to help prevent your child from being exposed to it, I encourage you to read this article: “What Parents Need To Know About Huggy Wuggy and the Poppy Playtime Taking Over Elementary Schools”.
As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please talk to Mrs. Askar and me. Thank you all for working as a team with us to keep your child safe!
Fun Activity Idea!
I encourage your child to practice their drawing skills this weekend! Have them draw a picture of whatever they want! As they draw, sit with them and ask them questions about what they are drawing. Encourage them to tell you a story in detail.
As they draw, encourage them to use shapes (circle head, rectangle body, square house, etc.). I’d love to see pictures of your child’s work! If you want, you can text them to me on Remind!
