Art Show news!!!
Every year the art department has an art show at the Ford Community and Performing Arts Center and Padzieski Gallery. Every teacher in the district is asked to choose 10-15 pieces (depending on the size of the school) to bring to display and represent their school. It is really difficult to choose such a small amount from the 1,000’s of pieces our students have created from September until March.
Here are the students who were chosen from Howard to have work displayed at the City Wide Arts Festival at the Padzieski Gallery at the Ford Performing Arts Center. The show runs from April 19-May 18.
Linnea Anderson
Milena Baydoun
Erik Giedeman
Maryam Boomrod (2 pieces)
Nadine Fayad
Suzanne Harajli
Hannah Mubaraz
Emily Skinner
Julianna Zaghir
Adrianna Dwyer
Muhammad Aoun
Eleanor Beatty
This year we are honored to have a Juror’s Choice recipient. This means that one of our students had her artwork chosen to go to another art show where the work has to be “specially selected” to be a part of the show. Only 12 pieces from the entire show are chosen, including middle school and high school. Maryam Boomrod’s Altered Book, which is in the showcase in the lobby of the Ford Performing Arts Center, is the piece that is going on to another art show!
Thank you students for all of your hard work this year! You make it so hard for me to choose what projects to take! I always have to get help make the final selections

Welcome Back!
Welcome Back!
Well, despite the spring -like weather, I went ahead and hung some of the 1st and 2nd grade Perspective Snowmen in the lower elementary/art hall way! They are too cute not to display and our artists’ efforts and accomplishments deserve to be celebrated! I will, however be taking them down by the end of next week! I am ready for some colorful spring-like art in our Howard Art Gallery!
1st and 2nd grade students should bring home their Frank Stella style collage relief sculpture! Hopefully they survive the trip home! Some of the vocabulary you could ask your little artist about are listed:
Abstract art
Frank Stella
Border
French Curve
Organic shape
Positive and negative space
3D
3rd, 4th and 5th grade abstract paintings in the style of Wassily Kandinsky will go on display in the Howard Art Gallery beginning next week.
Kindergarten artists just completed “W” is for Warm Colors Weaving. They did a line painting of red orange and yellow (they are beautiful paintings!) and then completed it by weaving red and (optional) yellow yarn as a border.

Ahhhhh! Winter?
Believe it or not, I am hoping for a big snow to inspire our snowman perspective unit! The kindergartners have begun, despite our spring-like weather!
Currently, the studio artists are working on a lot!
Kdg – completed color-mixing with paint to create a color wheel, created orange organic shapes, and have begun snowmen!
1st and 2nd have been working for a very long time to complete a Frank Stella inspired, 3D, Abstract Art collage! YES! your artist can tell you ALL of that and more about their collage! Look for these in the Howard Art Gallery!
3rd grade artists are in the final stages of color mixing to create a Kandinsky style concentric circle painting.
4th grade artists are learning the color wheel – the order, proper spelling, classification and color mixing. They took a pre-test, created a color wheel and are practicing mixing the colors and painting the mixed color-wheel colors into a Kandinsky style composition. Reviewing for next week’s test is happening this week!
5th grade artists are creating Kandinsky paintings while exploring many different watercolor techniques and the principles of art – movement and emphasis!
4/5 split is working on Equal Rights Personal Art. All students chose an equal rights topic, looked at art from the DIA to inspire visual creativity and are creating individual artworks from clay sculptures, to mosaics to paintings.
Tired of the rain and the kids are getting restless? Ms. Phillips shared this great YouTube link for drawing:

Enjoy the vacation!
Hello!
For the season, each grade did a different project.
Kindergarten artists brought home a handmade card and gift that are in an envelope! If you are the lucky recipient of this gift, I truly hope you enjoy it!
1st grade artists will be bringing home a 3D pine tree.
2nd grade artists brought home a beautiful symmetrical quilling project. I hope it is hanging proudly in your home!
3rd grade artists are completing a 3D paper ornament. It will come home tomorrow, if it did not already.
4th grade artists are bringing home a surprise! I cannot tell! However, I must say, it is quite cool!
5th grade artists created FInnish Stars. They are a traditional craft done by children in Finland and then sent to friends and family as gifts.
PARENTS OF 5th GRADERS!!!! Your child needs to bring in an empty tissue box asap!!! If you would prefer to donate a full box, I can trade your child the full box to be used for runny noses for an empty one that your child can use for the project!
Please have a safe and happy vacation!

December has found us!
Hello from the Howard Art Studio!
Kindergarten is working on the “L” page of our art alphabet book this week. Lion’s Lines will give the artists an opportunity to create different types of lines in crayon and water color crayons – so cool!!!!
1st and 2nd grade artists are creating a multi-media collage in the style of Abstract Artist, (still alive) Frank Stella. His art is in every predominant art museum in the world. He was honored with the National Medal of Arts, a presidential initiative. Yes, Obama himself, gave Frank the award! So we are working, currently on tracing french curves, designing and creating “borders” and light and dark colors and how they help our art.
3rd and 4th grades are working on color mixing.
Look for 5th grade Impressionist still life paintings beautifying the halls of our school!
