THIS WEEKEND!!!! TAKE THE KIDS!!! EASTERN MARKET MURALS!!!!

Murals in EASTERN MARKET!!!! An amazing experience to watch the muralists painting murals all over Eastern Market! I hope you can take this annual opportunity to grab some fresh veggies as you peruse the murals from past festivals and watch the new ones happening live in front of you! KIDS LOVE THIS!!!!!! Take a wagon to haul the younger kids!

Probably most interesting for adult music fans! I have not seen it yet, but I suggest maybe going for a “date night” before taking the kids!

Make a trip to the zoo extra fun!

Make a trip to the zoo extra fun!

Have your child take a sketchbook to the zoo and allow them time to draw the animals and/or plants that appeal to them! Allow them time to really study the outside edges (contours) of what they are drawing. Encourage them and ask them to tell you about their drawing and drawing process. What did they draw first, second, etc.

For a continuation of this activity at home, and with your supervision, look up some “how to draw…”
videos on You Tube. There are many child-friendly drawing videos. Your artist can follow the tutorial for any animals they did not have time to draw. Please, parents, watch the video without your child’s presence before allowing them to follow it to make sure it is 100% appropriate by the values and standards your family supports.

Have an outstanding summer! Let your kiddos create, create, create! Outdoors is a great place for painting and other messy activities!

I miss them already!

We are excited to share with you the brand-new website for the 14th Arab Film Festival (AFF), which begins Friday, June 7. View the complete schedule and purchase tickets, four-packs and full-festival passes now at www.aanmfilmfest.org.

This year’s festival offers more than 15 premieres; four programs of short films including one that’s kid-friendly followed by crafts and games; and a curated selection of the best Arab and Arab American films of various genres from the international festival circuit.

Among the titles are Nadine Labaki’s highly acclaimed drama Capernaum; 2018 Cannes Film Festival darling Yomeddine; another Cannes award-winning film, Sofia; and Dunya’s Day, a short film that won a Jury Award at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival.

The Arab American National Museum’s 14th annual Arab Film Festival brings the perspective of marginalized voices to the fore. This year’s curated selection of films explores stories related to home, community and diaspora. All AFF films are subtitled in English.

Most screenings take place at the Aliya Hassan Auditorium at the Arab American National Museum, with additional screenings at the Detroit Film Theatre at Detroit Institute of Arts and the State Theatre in Ann Arbor.

During the festival, use these hashtags to let us know via social media what films you enjoyed: #aanmfilmfest19 and #supportarabfilm. You can also complete ballots on site to vote for your favorite films in various categories.

See you at the AFF!

CONGRATULATIONS ART SHOW STUDENTS!

CONGRATULATIONS ART SHOW STUDENTS!

Every year I have the tough choice of which 10 pieces of art to take to the Dearborn Youth Arts Festival for the Dearborn Public Schools City Wide Art Show. I make the selection with the help of other students, teachers, administrators and persons in the community I respect for their eye for art.
We look at how well the student met the content objective for the lesson and the skill with which they completed it and the creativity and attention to detail.
This year’s selected student art pieces were created by:
Nour Elzeny
Amelie Salame
Olivia Swint
Mikhail Busel
Celine Soueid
Halie Mattison
Leo Wetzel
Arman Mahmud
Ariadna Cortes
Eleanor Beatty

Please stop by the Civic Center/Padzieski Gallery to see the 100’s of artworks on display by our remarkable Dearborn Student Artists anytime from April 24, 4:00 pm (Opening Ceremony) through May 29 at 6:00 pm.
