Mrs. Takacs 7th & 8th Grade Science

Dearborn Public Schools

11/1/18

7th Grade:

Bell work:  Why is it important to take notes during the create step?

It is important to take notes because_______.

Planner: Finish your Engineering Collaboration ws: Due at the end of the hour. Students who turn this in late will lose one letter grade on this 30 point summative assignment. Review for quiz.

HW: Study for quiz!

Quiz tomorrow!!

10/31/18

7th Grade:

Bellwork:  What is the first step in the Engineering Process?

The first step in the engineering process is to______________.

Planner:

  • Machine Engineering Challenge: Final day to build.
  • Begin Engineering/Collaboration worsheet –due tomorrow, Thursday (11/1). This assignment is worth half (15pts) of the summative grade (30pts) for this group project.

HW:

  • Engineering/Collaboration worksheet If you aren’t finished in class.
  • Engineering Design Study Guide.Study Guide Engineering and Design quiz
  • I will also be collecting your lab report from day 1 and the cause and effect flow chart from day 2 of the machine challenge tomorrow (11/1).

Quiz:  Friday Nov. 2.

10/30/18

7th Grade:

Bellwork:  Please write a list of class norms that will help our class run smoothly.

Today in class we worked on our machine challenge. I walked around and graded groups based on the collaboration norms we established before this group project. We will continue with this project tomorrow.

HW:  None.

Quiz:  Friday Nov. 2.

10/29/18

7th Grade: Bellwork: What area in collaboration do you need to grow in?

Today students watched a short video about cause and effect machines. Students were given the criteria and constraints for the machine project:

Criteria:

  1. Move the white ball into the red cup.
  2. Have as many cause and effect steps as possible.

Constraints:

  1. Use only the materials provided.
  2. The ball must be stationary (not moving) to start.
  3. The ball must be put in motion without a person touching it.
  4. The machine must fit on your team’s tables.

Students began by drawing a plan for their machine, and started using the materials to test out their ideas. Tomorrow we will continue with this group project, which will be a summative grade of 30 points. Students will be graded using the attached rubric.

Homework: None

The engineering quiz is this Friday, Nov. 2. 2018. This will be the last summative grade for the first card marking.

Machine Challenge Documents

10/26/18

7th Grade: Today students reviewed the norms of collaboration we came up with in class yesterday. They also took notes on a PowerPoint presentation about the engineering process. This information will help guide them next week when they complete an engineering challenge in groups. These notes will also be a great study tool for our quiz on the engineering process next Friday. Homework: Answer the following question: “What evidence can we look for to prove our team works collaboratively?” See the PowerPoint by following this link: Engineering and Design 7.0

10/25/18

7th Grade: Today students traded design directions pages and tried to duplicate a classmate’s design simply by following their directions. We discussed how this relates to science, and why scientists must be very clear in their description of procedures for science experiments. We also created a list of norms for collaboration when working in groups during science class. For homework students should answer the following question: “How could being unclear in your description of procedures affect the results of an experiment?”

10/24/18

7th Grade: Today students created an artistic design. They wrote very clear and specific directions for how to duplicate the design they created. For homework they should answer the following question on the back of their design directions paper, “Why is being clear in my description of procedures important in science?”
