NWEA testing went well today, a few students may need to finish up tomorrow. If their score decreased from the end of last year’s score, that is not unusual, please don’t worry. The test is different because they are now in 6th grade and their score will increase as we progress through the year!
Students were assigned and enrolled in a summer learning course at the end of 5th grade. I will be looking at the Khan Academy minutes spent from 6/1 through 9/28. The minimum number of minutes for full credit (100%) is 384. This number was determined by the district and will count as a quiz grade.
The ilearn basic skill quizzes I assigned will be averaged and will count as the other quiz grade for the Summer Learning Course credit. These quizzes are now available to take at home.

We continued to discuss prime and composite numbers and homework today was to complete the “Prime Number Maze.” All attachments along with this will be in the Homework Attachments page. Students were given the password today.
We organized our ISN today and included class procedures and rules.
Many students have not passed the basic skill (add, subtract, multiply and divide) quizzes. I let the students know who and which quizzes they need to take. I decided to unlock the quizzes on ilearn for home use so please encourage your child to take them at home as many times as needed for fluency.
NWEA testing will be Monday.

We identified prime and composite numbers today. Homework is to complete the prime-composite-frayer-model. Use ISN as a reference.

Students were given their textbook today. Homework tonight is cover it using a jumbo size book cover or wrap it old-school style with a brown paper bag. We will use the textbook when needed because it does not align completely with the common core state standards.
We completed the basic skill quizzes and students can share their scores with you by logging into ilearn.
Open House is tonight, 6th grade will begin in the auditorium at 6 after the title 1 parent meeting at 5:30. At 6:45, please follow your students schedule to visit their classrooms. See you there!

In class we found the circumference of our heads and height as part of “Math About Me!” Finish for homework and use complete sentences, color text and include a picture of themselves. If not available, they can draw a picture.
Some students have not created the cover page on their ISN or organized their binders. Students can see me if they are need of any materials for this.
We also began to take four quizzes on the basic skills using addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. These quizzes are on ilearn and must be taken in class. We will complete this in class tomorrow.

Students organized their binders today and began to organize their ISN (Interactive Student Notebook). Their homework is to personalize their ISN cover, number pages, and have all supplies in by Tuesday.
We also went over the syllabus in class today and they will share this with you today, please sign. A copy of this syllabus as well as the list of suggested supplies is under the “Class Info” page on my blog.
Tomorrow the 6th graders will be participating in team building activities, please dress appropriately (gym shoes, no skirts or dresses).

Most students accomplished opening their lockers but some are still working on that. We were able to get to know each other better today and learned about some classroom procedures. We will work on organizing binders and getting the ISN (composition notebook) started tomorrow.
Monday, September 6, 2016 First day of school
It was so nice meeting students today! If you are reading this, I am assuming your child has shared the letter I sent home with them.
This week we will be getting to know each other and how 6th grade works. We will work on organization of our math binders and composition books (ISN or Interactive Student Notebook).
The suggested supply list includes a calculator and this is optional. We have enough scientific calculators in class for everyone but the calculator on the supply list is just if needed for convenience.
