Ms. Gerardo's Class

Dearborn Public Schools

Check-in:

Hello Again,

Just a couple of things this morning:

-If you have not checked out Readworks yet, please take a moment to this week! It is a great resource for reading!

-Please take a minute to complete the class survey

-Although Lindbergh’s spirit week was last week, our feeder track is having one this week. Instead of doing it all over again, you can add the #pioneerpride to your pictures to include them in the feeder spirit week if you so choose. More details on this on the school blog.

-Next week is spring break and there will be no additional assignments, blog posts, etc. for that week.

Hello Kindergarten Families!

If you are currently overwhelmed by the amount of work or activities being provided to your child, don’t worry! Please understand that we are posting more than enough activities as a way to err on the side of having too much to do instead of too little. I am only expecting the kindergarten students and families in this class to do what they can. It is important that you child continues with their learning, but that looks different for each child. In addition, not all activities may be suitable for all students; of you are finding an assignment is far to easy or difficult-STOP! There are plenty of activities and things for students to complete without needlessly stressing them out with work that is too hard or inundating them with work that is too easy just for the sake of completing work. Please make the choices as a family that are right for you and your child in helping them continue in their learning. If you are feeling like your child is doing fine keeping up and you feel good about the pace, keep going! However, if you and your child are feeling differently, the most critical items to complete are math lessons or zearn, read books (or use razkids), some sort of phonics activities as posted to google classroom, and writing at least twice per week. In addition please email me if you need more assistance or are feeling overwhelmed-I am happy to help and here to support you and your children.

I will also be sending out a brief survey to take the temperature of the class and plan future instruction.

Warmly,

Marika Anthony

How are you doing?

Hello Families!

I just wanted to take a minute to acknowledge that although we are very focused on our physical health (as we should be) we also need to remember our emotional and mental health at this time. It can be very difficult and overwhelming to be stuck at home and tackling all of these new things at once for the students and for you! I have attached a couple of resources for decompressing below, I hope you find some of them helpful!

Firstly, for an article about how to talk to your children about COVID-19 from PBS click here

Next, teachers LOVE this website called Go Noodle click on the link and register for a free account. There are tons of great activities for kids to get moving on this website, but I would like to point out the FLOW category in particular where different mindfulness and calming activities can be found that are developmentally appropriate for students of elementary age.

Also, this youtube channel cosmic yoga has many different videos for kids with developmentally appropriate yoga using fun stories.

For all of the parents! The Headspace and Calm apps found in any app store are wonderful and both have free trials. These can also be used with teenage children.

Finally, although we are necessarily somewhat isolated connection is still important! Having you child talk on the phone or google hangout to a friend or family member, or make a card for someone or play a board game with a sibling is a great way to stay connected.

I hope at least one of these suggestions was helpful!

Warmly,

3/18/20-updates

Hello Kindergarten Families,

Firstly, I would like to thank all of you for the hard work that you are doing with your children during this time of transition. The Kindergarten team and I know that sometimes things don’t work as planned or can get frustrating and we are here to help if you need us.

Next, I am working on putting together a frequently asked questions page here so that you can check it for answers to questions that seem to be popping up a lot. Please look for that in the next day or two.

A reminder that the kindergarten team is working together during this time, and so assignments posed by Mrs. Muston or Mrs. Ruselink or any of the specials area teachers apply to all kindergarten students. We all have our own separate blogs and remind accounts for personal updates and contacts.

In addition to the resources that we already have, I would like to set up a readworks account. Please follow the directions below to sign up.

How to get students to their assignments

1. Have students go to www.readworks.org/student

2. Students should sign in with their Google account.

3. Students enter class code SDG2GB

Please note that no assignments are assigned yet, I will be doing that in the next couple of days. This is a free resources that I have used for years and I have found it a great resource for students of all ages. If you have older children they may already have an account so you may be more familiar with this.

As always, please continue to check google classroom for assignments, the blog for announcements daily and let me know if you have any questions or concerns via remind, email, the blog, or google classroom.

Warmly,

Marika Anthony

Google Classroom

Hello Families!

At this point all families should have received a personal email from me, if you have not please comment below or email me at anthonm@dearbornschools.org so that I can make sure that you get all of the information that you need.

I just wanted to add on here that if you are having trouble logging in through google classroom using the directions I provided in the previous post, you can use these directions instead:

  1. go to dearbornschools.org and click on student portal
  2. click the tab titled student district email/Google login
  3. login with your child’s email (included in the personal email you received) and password which is their full birthday (mmddyyyy)
  4. There should be an invite from me to get into the google classroom, click on it.
  5. Our class code is y7yfc3f

All of the kindergarten teachers are sharing this class and we will be including the specials teachers as well.

In terms of assignment deadlines, we understand that this is a very unusual situation and that many family members may need to use the internet or computer at the same time. For these reasons, we will either be putting lengthy deadlines on assignments or none at all so that you can work through them with your child as you are available to.

As always, I am available for questions at anthonm@dearbornschools.org or through the remind app.

Best,

Marika Anthony

Kindergarten Updates!

Hello Kindergarten Families,

We know that this is a difficult time for all members of our community and country. At Lindbergh we plan to do our very best to help students continue learning from home while we take necessary safety precautions for staff, students, and families. For the time being, Mrs. Anthony (myself) and Mrs. Muston will be working together on planning lessons for all kindergarten students and sharing a google classroom. We know that there will be a lot of new information coming in the next few days, so please take this one step at a time and let me know if you have any questions.

Below I have attached a couple of letters, you will be receiving these via email as well within the next few days. Please take the time to read over this information. Please also continue to check the school wide blog for important updates.
