HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!!

Happy New Year to all!!!

Have you made any New Year’s Resolutions???  I have!!! One of my main resolutions is to BE HAPPY!!!!

Testing:  Just a couple of reminders:  Basketball hand dribble and jump roping tests will begin next.  We’ll practice every P.E. Day, but you should be practicing every day at home, too!

Mitten Tree:  This is the last week we will be collecting for the Mitten Tree.  If you can donate any new gloves, scarves, hats, socks or mittens, that would be great!  We will take them to Starfish Family Services next week!

Running Club:  I will be handing out permission slips to the Running Club Members for the Martian Marathon Kids Race (on Sat.  April 9th) next week!  They will need to be turned in to me by mid-February in order to get the discount price of $15.00.

Jump Rope For Heart:  Information will be coming out soon!  New this year – puppies instead of ducks!  JRFH will be held in P.E. Classes the week of Feb. 8 – 12, 2016!

The end of this 2nd Marking Period is January 29, 2016.  Wow, we’re almost halfway through the school year.  Time flies when you’re learning and having fun!

HEALTHY TIDBIT :  Hand washing is important for your health!!!

-Hand washing should become a habit you do often!  Hands get dirty even though you can’t see the dirt and germs.

-Washing your hands is one of the best ways to keep you from getting sick.

-You should wash your hands before you eat and after you blow your nose or use the bathroom, or after you do anything that gets them dirty.

-Make sure to wash your hands WITH SOAP AND WATER for as long as it takes you to sing your ABC’s.

-When washing your hands, don’t forget to wash your palms and backs of your hands and under your fingernails – the whole hand.

-Turn off the water by using the paper towel you used to dry your hands.

-You can use hand sanitizer if you aren’t able to wash your hands.  Just make sure to use just enough to wet your hands all over and rub your hands until they are dry – just as if you were washing them!

AND BY THE WAY – DON’T FORGET WHEN YOU COUGH OR SNEEZE, COUGH OR SNEEZE  INTO YOUR ELBOW!

Basketball is here!

Well, we’ve started basketball.  YIPPEE!!  It’s just about everyone’s favorite sport.  You only need a ball and a hard surface to dribble the ball .  Jumping rope is a favorite, also!  You just need a rope!  These are 2 of the activities we are practicing  in PE class.  There will also be assessments and grades for those 2 activities.

I hope you are going to be tuned in to the Big 10 Championship Basketball Game on Saturday (12/5) night!  It’s going to be quite a game with the Iowa Hawkeyes playing the MICHIGAN STATE SPARTANS!!  Guess who I’m rooting for????

I got up bright and early on Thanksgiving day to run a 5K Race!  It was the Ann Arbor Thanksgiving Day Turkey Trot.  Eleven of my family members (including me) braved the rain and started our day with a fun 3.1 mile run.  We then went to my sister”s house and enjoyed a day of visiting and eating.  Good thing we ran that race and had our exercise that morning!

Here’s a Healthy Tid Bit:

Breakfast is a very important meal.  Just like a car needs gasoline to run, our bodies need food fuel to work. Especially after a night’s sleep, our bodies need to refuel for the new day!  Not eating breakfast leaves us without energy.  Children especially need breakfast to be ready for a great energized day at school.  Toast, juice, cereal with milk, fruit, or yogurt are great choices.  Just skip the sugary cereals!

Until next time….Go Green!!!

I am thankful for…..

This time of year people across the United States gather with family and friends and celebrate Thanksgiving.  It’s a time of sharing and laughing and being thankful for the things we have and the people we have in our lives.  Think to yourself “what am I thankful for”?  Sometimes it’s so simple like family and friends and sometimes it’s so simple we don’t realize how lucky we are.  So….in addition to my family and friends, I am thankful for a job I love and that I get to wear gym clothes to  work every day!  I am thankful to work with a great staff at Henry Ford.  I am thankful that the students at Henry Ford love P.E.!   I am thankful that I like to exercise and play sports so it’s not a struggle to be active.  I’m thankful for the sun that shines and that even if it’s only 15 degrees, it makes me smile.  I’m also thankful for the food I am able to buy and the home I live in.  I’m also thankful that the Running Club wants to sponsor the Mitten Tree, here, at Henry Ford so we can provide mittens, scarves and hats to those who cannot afford them.

I hope you can find lots to be thankful for.  Try to be thankful everyday because there are others that don’t have much to be thankful for.

I hope you have a Happy Thanksgiving!  I hope you enjoy your break.  I know I will!

When we come back to school it’s galloping, basketball dribbling, jumping rope and lots of fun in P.E. Class!!!

Healthy Tidbit:  Soda pop might taste good, but it really isn’t good for you!  Drinking too much pop can result in erosion of tooth enamel, it cal also lead to overweight or obese children, also when children drink pop, the are consuming lots of sugar and drinking less milk. What can you do instead of drinking pop?  Drink water, or milk or lowfat chocolate milk or low sugar 100% fruit or vegetable juices.

Healthy Kids and Healthy Families

Good food choices + daily physical activity = a healthy life.  The choices you make can either help or hurt your health.  Here are 5 simple ways for your family to lead a healthy life:

1 – Get moving each day!  60 minutes is recommended, but it doesn’t have to happen all at once or be the same activity.  Activities should include vigorous activities.  Parents can be role models by being active, also.

2 – Choose water as a drink!  It’s a great way to quench your thirst and it doesn’t come with added sugar found in pop, fruit juice drinks or other sweetened drinks.  It also doesn’t have added sodium found in sports drinks such as gatorade.  Milk is a great drink and a great source of calcium.

3 – Eat more fruits and vegetables!  Eating  fruits and veggies every day helps to provide the body with vitamins and minerals to help kids grow and develop.  Have fruits and veggies available in your house for a quick snack and try to include fruits and veggies with every meal.

4 – Turn off the TV, computer, i pad and cell phone apps and get active!  Kids and teens should spend no more that1 – 2 hours  a day on “electronic entertainment”.  There are many other things to do  –  read a book, do homework, draw or color, write in a journal, go outside for a walk.  Go to the Civic Center or Hype, play a game.  I’m sure you can think of many other ways to have some fun.

5 – Eat fewer snack and make healthier snack choices!  Healthy snacks give kids vitamins and fiber.  Snacks from the fruit, vegetable, dairy and grain groups are the healthiest choices

Halloween Fun Parade

It was a beautiful day for a parade that included princesses, witches, goblins and storm troopers!  Students had the chance to walk around the track and check out the other student’s and teacher’s costumes!  The weather was nice and a fun time was had by all.

Most of the skill testing is completed.  Just a few more students to assess.  The new marking period begins on Monday, Nov. 9th.

4th and 5th grade students will be swimming for 2 weeks during their gym times beginning the week of Nov. 9th!  A note will be going home the week of Nov. 2nd.  Start getting those swimming items ready!

Healthy tid bit – tomatoes!

Did you know….?

A tomato is actually a fruit and not a vegetable!  A fruit is the part of the plant that has seeds that you can eat, while a vegetable is the stems, leaves or roots of a plant that you can eat.

The tomato is the world’s most popular fruit!

Tomatoes are one of the most nutritious fruits in the world!

Robert Cipriano Memorial Run

The Robert Cipriano Memorial Run was held this past Saturday at Ford Field Park in Dearborn.  It was a sunny, but COLD morning!  4th grade runners arrived about 8:15 am and checked in and checked out the race course and tried to stay warm.  4th grade girls ran first, then the 4th grade boys.  While they were running, the 5th graders started arriving.  The 5th grade girls ran, then the 5th grade boys.

Everyone had a great time!  We had 3 runners who were awarded a medal by coming in the top 10 in their grade and gender.  Those runners are:

4th grade:  Malena Kadry in Mrs. Shupe’s Class – 8th place!

5th grade:  Bushra Jomaa (Mrs. Makowski’s class) – 10th place and Fatima Sharara (Mrs. Beydoun’s class) – 2nd place!!!!

Congrations, girls!  Congratulations to all runners!

If you want to check out your results, go to:  RFTiming.com and look for 2015 events and click on your event at the top of the page.

A big thank you to Mrs. Spencer who helped at the race!!!

This week in each of our PE classes is instep kick practice for our instep kick assessments next week.  4th and 5th graders are getting a tour of the pool because they will be swimming in a few weeks (mid-November).

On your mark, get set…….

Great running everyone!  The 4th grade  13 min. run and the 5th grade 15 min. run were held in PE classes this week!  I really could see students concentrating and working very hard and showing best effort while they were running.  So many students qualified for the Robert Cipriano Memorial Run that will be held in the morning on Saturday, October 17th!!!  The run is located at Ford Field Park in Dearborn – only about 1.5 miles west on Michigan Ave.  Those students who qualified  were given a permission slip to attend the Cipriano Run.  The permission slip has lots of information on it.  The signed permission slip is due to me (Mrs. Suarez) no later than Tuesday, October, 6th.  Parents will need to transport their child to the run and stay and watch them and then transport them home on Oct. 6th.  I will be at the race (with Mrs. Spencer, 2nd grade teacher) to make sure the students get to their races on time.  I hope that everyone that took a permission slip turns it in on  time.

Next week we start with the soccer balls!  The instep kick is our main skill, along with foot dribble.  If you have a soccer ball at home, you can get extra practice with it at home.

I hope you have a great and active weekend.  4th and 5th graders – drink lots of water!!  You sure worked hard and you need to re-hydrate your body!
