Have a sunny day!

It’s another beautiful day!

Pictures of the Swimming Pool at Henry Ford!

It’s  November 1st and it’s 70 degrees and sunny!  I love it and I hope you do, too! Today we didn’t want to waste a beautiful day, so we ran outside to enjoy the weather because by the end of the week it’s going to be cold again.  Take advantage of the weather and play outside after school.

In 2 weeks the 4th and 5th graders will go SWIMMING!  CHECK OUT THE PICTURES OF OUR POOL!!!  We are so lucky to have a swimming pool at Henry Ford.  All of the 4th and 5th graders will wear life jackets for safety.  The students will work on feeling comfortable in and around the water, we’ll also learn about safety around the water, kicking on our fronts and backs and using our arms on our fronts and backs.

Just about all of our testing has been completed.  We’re just about ready for Conferences and the 2nd Marking Period!

Runners…take your mark!

Mohammed Aasaadi came in 5th place out of hundreds of 5th grade boys! Congrats!!

Hello, all!

It’s that time of year again.  The time for running!  The weather is cool and it’s a perfect time to get outside and go for a run!

This Saturday (10/15/16) is the Annual Cipriano Memorial Run at Ford Field Park in Dearborn.  Students from the middle and elementary schools in Dearborn will take part in either the 2 mile (middle school) or 1 mile (elementary school) runs in memory of Robert Cipriano, a long time Dearborn School employee.  There are 56 students from Henry Ford that are participating in this event!

Good Luck to all runners!

Also…..the 4th and 5th Grade students have been working very hard in PE class.  The 13 (4th grade) and 15 (5th grade) minute run tests have been going on these past 2 weeks!  We have some fantastic runners!

Healthy Tidbit:  This is the area that I will give you a healthy bit of news.  It could be about healthy food, a healthy behavior, or a fun healthy, family activity.  Here’s a fun activity:  Go to a Dearborn Park and see how many leaves you can pick up in 30 sec.  Maybe you could collect all the same color, or all the same kind.  Have a parent time you and then you time your parent, then count the leaves and see who collected the most leaves!

Have a great week and…….

Have a sunny day!

Welcome Back!

Keep Smiling….and have a sunny day!

Hello, everyone!  Welcome back to school!  I am so excited to see all of you again!  I hope you had an active summer!  I sure did, I swam, walked, biked, did some gardening and ran 8.2 miles around Mackinac Island!!! It was a great summer – even with the heat!

We have a new additional PE Teacher and some of you will have her for your PE Teacher.  That’s her, with her Henry Ford Sweatshirt on!  Her name is Ms. Beck and she taught at Miller Elementary School last year.  She is very excited to be here!

I hope we all have a fun and active year!

See you in class or in the hall!

Volleyball game results!

Well, the results are in!  The Staff vs 5th Grade Volleyball Team was held in the gym on Thursday, June 2, 2016 at 2:00 pm.  It was an exciting game!  The 5th grade team worked very hard and tried their hardest, but could not beat the Staff Team!  Final score was 15 – 4!  The Staff was on fire!  Mrs. Hammoud gave her all for the team and ended up on the floor after an exciting save!

Great game 5th graders!

Great game staff!

We have one more full week left in this school year!  There are still lots of things to be done:  jogging, playing kick ball or whiffle ball or frozen tag or the musical word game or Fitgo Bingo!  Whatever we do, we’ll be active until the very last day!!!!!!!

Hot, hot, hot!

The weather has finally changed!  It is warm and sometimes hot out there!  Classes will be spending some time outside jogging and playing kickball.  What fun!

Just remember – wear sunscreen – even to school – because all students go out for lunch recess and some may go out during P.E. Class.  Having a sunburn is no fun!

Also, remember – hydrate your body!  That means drink more water during the warmer months and when you are exercising and sweating (like in P.E. Class).  3rd, 4th and 5th grade may bring a re-useable hard plastic or stainless steel water bottle to P.E. Class.  Don’t forget to wash it out with soap and water everyday!

Happy Memorial Day!  It’s a day to remember and thank all of the service men and women who served their country.  It’s because of them we have our freedom!  THANK YOU!!

Coming down the stretch!

Hello, Hello!

Testing is just about over and we’re coming down the stretch.  It doesn’t mean the race is over, it means we need to work just as hard to get to the finish!  We need to work hard on the same things we’ve been working hard on all year; following PBIS Expectations, being kind and showing compassion, helping others, doing homework and showing best effort in all classes.  The weather is getting warmer and we’ll be going outside a bit more in PE class – if only just to run.  Kick ball and whiffle ball will lead the activities as well as jogging around our track.  How lucky we are to have great playgrounds and a nice big track to run around!

HEALTHY TID BIT: SUN SAFETY ALL YEAR ‘ROUND!!!

Some exposure to the sun is good!  It’s the best source of vitamin D, which helps our bodies absorb calcium for stronger and healthier bones.

Too much sun exposure is not good!  It can cause skin damage, eye damage and possibly skin cancer.  In order to protect yourself from the sun’s damaging rays you should:

-Use sunscreen-everyday-even on cloudy days and in the winter!  The SPF (sun protection factor) should be at least 30 and your sunscreen should say “water resistant up to 80 minutes” and “broad spectrum” on the label.  In addition to your body, don’t forget to apply sunscreen to ears, hands, feet, behind the neck and don’t forget lip balm (chapstick) with SPF 30, also.  It’s best to re-apply sunscreen every 2 hours.  There are a wide variety  of sunscreens out there and some of them are not very good.  Check with your Doctor to see what’s best for you.

-Cover up – This means a hat with a wide brim, a light long sleeved shirt.

-Sunglasses – the label should say 100% UV protection.  Did you know that your eye’s iris’s can get sunburned?

-Shade – Take shade breaks, get out of the sun and do an activity in the shade-under an umbrella or a tree.  Stay out of the sun during the hottest part of the day – (10 am -2 pm).

Remember – Have Fun in the Sun – but do it Safely!!!

Have a sunny day!

Here’s what’s going on….

Well another week has flown by!  The raffle has begun, but will end soon, so drop your entry in the correct Raffle Box before the deadline!

This week the K – 2 classes practice their skipping and then had their test!  There are some wonderful skippers at Henry Ford!  They also practice the overhand throw by throwing a ball at a target on the wall.  Remember how to throw: Ready position, T, step, turn and bend, throw (and tickle for 2nd grade).  Third graders  had fun catching very large and very mini sports balls.  They are also starting to jog around the gym because next year they have the 13 min. run test!!!  Fourth and 5th grades are stretching every day they have PE Class and they are SUPPOSED TO BE STRETCHING AT HOME EVERY DAY, too! Don’t forget, the 4th and 5th grade sit and reach test is 2 weeks!  The 4th grade is also practicing their overhand throw by playing pickle and the 5th grade are batting in hopes of playing whiffle ball when the weather gets warmer.  I hope you have an active weekend, so remember get outside and play!!!

Healthy tidbit:  Carrots are from the vegetable group.  Did you know that the longest carrot ever recorded was nearly 19 feet long?  Carrots are not always orange.  There are also purple, red, white and yellow carrots.  Carrots are a great snack-anytime.  I especially love to eat carrots dipped in ranch dressing!  Carrots are full of vitamins – some are good for your eyes.  Eating carrots can help you see better at night. Holtville, California calls itself the “Carrot Capital of the World” and throws a carrot festival every year.

Get ready to giggle!

Q:  How do you know carrots are good for your eyes?

A:  Have you ever seen a rabbit wearing glasses?

Q:  What is orange and sounds like a parrot?

A:  A carrot!

Hahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!
