The Martians landed and then ran to the finish line!!!

Martian Runners!!!! So excited to get to the start line!

Henry Ford Martian Marathon Runners made the front page of the Press and Guide Newspaper!! Wow!!

Teachers who came to help and cheer on the Henry Ford Runners!  Thank you!

I ran the 5K (3.1 miles) at 8 am, before the students ran their race at noon!

What a beautiful day it was!  This past Saturday was Martian Marathon Saturday!  The sun was out, the air was a bit cool, but that didn’t bother the 34 Henry Ford Runners that lined up at the start line for the Martian Marathon 1.2 mile run at Ford Field Park in Dearborn!  They ran on the grass, up the BIG hill, across the top, down the BIG hill, into the woods, out of the woods and sprinted to the finish line!!!  Friends and families cheered them on!!!  In all, counting the miles they ran in running club, the runners ran a full Marathon – that’s 26.2 miles!!!! Great going runners!!!  If you see any student with a black t-shirt with flying saucers on it, you’ll know they ran the race!!!

A BIG THANK YOU goes to Mrs. Spencer and Mrs. McCormick for all of their help on race day.  They checked in runners and made sure they were ready to run.  Also, THANKS to Mrs. Hammoud, Mrs. Fawaz and Mrs. Shupe for cheering on all of the runners!!!

Healthy Tidbit:  Because of the race, running and sweating, I thought I’d talk a little bit about hydration.  The best thing you can drink after a sweaty activity is……………….WATER – you guessed it!  The second best thing you can drink after a sweaty activity is………………….milk – white  or chocolate.  Both of these drinks provide hydration for the average athlete. Instead of a gatorade or other sports drink, the average athlete should refuel with water or milk and a variety of foods that contain carbohydrates, protein, and vitamins and minerals.  For example, eat a whole-wheat bagel or toast with peanut butter or a banana with peanut butter.

The Martians are coming, the Martians are coming!!!

Well………..it’s time for the Kid’s Mini Martian Marathon!!!!!!!!!!!!  Students from the running club will line up at the starting line this Saturday, April22nd!!!  They will be running 1.2 miles at Ford Field in Dearborn.  When they have finished the race, they will have completed a full Marathon!!!  That’s 26.2 miles.  Running Club begins in September each year for 4th and 5th graders.  The runners log their mileage each week and by the time the Martian Marathon begins, they will already have run 25 miles.  Add that to the 1.2 they will run this Saturday and it equals 26.2-a full marathon!!  Congrats Runners!

4th Marking Period:  K through 4th grade are working on throwing and catching and skipping.   5th grade is working on batting and stretching for their flexibility test!

Volleyball Team practice will begin in 3 weeks!

Healthy Tidbit:

-NOW IS THE TIME TO BECOME MORE ACTIVE!  The weather is nicer and going outside is more fun due to the warm weather.  Can you think of activities you can do to move your body?

How about:  Jogging or walking around the block.  Get your bike, skates, skate board or scooter and move around the block with it.  Motorized items don’t count!  Climb the monkey bars or swing on a swing.

Whatever you do, do it everyday – – at school AND at home!

-EXERCISE IS GOOD FOR YOUR BRAIN AND  FOR TAKING TESTS!  Touch your toes or do modified jumping jacks before taking a test – it wakes up your brain!

This is testing week!

Well, it’s finally here! Testing week!  All grades will be tested on the skills they have been practicing this marking period.  Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grades will be tested on sliding sideways and catching a ball.  Third Grade will be tested on their jumping rope.  4th and 5th grades will be tested on sit-ups and underhand strike (volleyball serve).  In 5th grade if a student earns a 1 or a 2 on their underhand strike test, they can enter their name in the hat.  From the hat, I will choose 3 names per class to be on the student volleyball team which will play the staff in the Spring.  Of course, they will need to be able to practice in the morning 2 days  per week for 2 weeks at 7:30 am.  They also, must be doing their classwork, homework and their behavior must be pretty good.  Good luck to all!

Check out the picture of the 2017 VOLLEYBALL TEAM!!!  CONGRATS TO ALL!  WE LOOK FORWARD TO WATCHING YOU PLAY!!!

The students from Running Club have turned in their race forms and looking forward to the Martian Marathon on Saturday, March 22nd at Ford Field Park in Dearborn.

We had a great turn out for Jump Rope for Heart!  There were many donations and lots of Rory’s handed out!  We collected over $2700.00!  Way to go!

Thank you to all who donated!  You have helped to save a life!

Healthy Tidbit:

How can you get more fruits and veggies into your diet?  We all know that fruits and veggies are good for your health.  Listed below are ways to incorporate them into your meals.

For breakfast, try adding raisins, bananas or berries to your low sugar cereal or oatmeal.  Add chopped veggies to your eggs or potatoes.  Try green or red peppers, spinach or onions.

For lunch try a fruit salad or veggie salad with your sandwich.  Bring a fruit and veggie in your lunch if you pack a lunch for school. Have a bowl of low salt vegetable soup with a sandwich.  Put a vegetable  on your sandwich.  Add lettuce, onions, sprouts cucumbers, tomatoes or avocado.

For an after school snack, try veggie sticks (carrots, green or red peppers or cucumbers) dipped in hummus.  How about cut up apples dipped in peanut butter?  Dried fruit like raisins, dates or dried apricots are yummy.  A handful of nuts is a good snack, too!

For dinner have a fruit or veggie salad with your meal.  Have a side of steamed or microwaved veggies.  Add extra veggies when cooking soup, chili or spaghetti sauce.  Have a baked potato or sweet potato with your meal.

The brighter the color the better!

Frozen fruit and veggies are just as nutritious as fresh, so looking in the frozen food for some great fruit and veggie ideas!

Well…this is the first week of the 3rd Marking Period!  Lots of new skills to learn and practice!!  Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grades are working on catching fly balls, sliding sideways and Cooperation (as part of their Sportsmanship grade).  3rd grade is working on Jumping rope, underhand strike and cooperation, also.  4th and 5th grade are working on sit ups, underhand strike and Respect (as part of their Sportsmanship grade).  DON’T FORGET 4TH AND 5TH GRADERS – YOU NEED TO PRACTICE YOUR SIT UPS AT HOME FOR 1 MINUTE, AT LEAST 2-3 TIMES PER WEEK!!!

JUMP ROPE FOR HEART letters to parents and donation envelopes went home this week!  We are collecting donations for the American Heart Association to help those with Heart Disease.  Did you know that heart disease can affect anyone at any age? It is the leading cause of death in America!  Healthy habits can help prevent many risk factors of heart disease!  We are saving lives!

Rory the Lion (plus the neck lanyard) is the thank you gift for a $5.00 donation.

Healthy tidbit:

Did you know that drinking too many sugared drinks ( pop, juice and sweet tea) can lead to erosion of tooth enamel?  It can also lead to obesity.  It also results in not enough consumption of calcium.  Milk is a primary source of calcium in the diets of children and adolescents.  Low calcium intake can result in the risk of osteoporosis and fractures of the bones.

Sooooo……cut down the the amount of sweetened drinks and drink more milk!  Chocolate milk is even better than the sweet drinks.

Other assessments include: galloping and jumping rope.  We will finish next week and then use those skills while playing some fun games!

THE MITTEN TREE IS HERE!!  Information went home today concerning the Mitten Tree.  It’s actually the mitten, glove, hat, scarf and socks tree!!  We are collecting new items to put on the tree.  At the end of the month, the Running Club will be sorting, counting and boxing up the items and then the boxes will be taken to Starfish Family Services, an organization in Wayne County that services those people in need in Wayne County.  I hope you can help!

Winter weather is here!

Study these pictures for the Reindeer Games!

Hello, all!

Wow, it’s cold outside!  Everyone is wearing coats, hats, gloves, scarves and boots!  Don’t forget – when you wear boots, don’t forget to bring shoes to change into when you get to school.  Boots are made to keep your feet warm and when you wear them all day in school, your feet get hot and sweaty (and sometimes stinky), plus your boots bring in snow which melts as you walk and gets the floor wet, so stomp your feet on the rug as you enter the school.  DON’T FORGET TO BRING GYM SHOES ON GYM DAYS WHEN YOU WEAR YOUR BOOTS!

We have been practicing basketball dribble, galloping and jumping rope.  Don’t forget to practice over break because testing will begin the week after we get back from Winter Break.

Next week (Dec 19 – 23) we will be playing Reindeer games during PE Class.  Start practicing those reindeer names.

Healthy Tidbit:

Did you know that you can exercise and play outside in the winter months?  All you need is a little more clothing.  There are lots of ways to exercise in the winter besides walking and running.  How about:  shoveling snow, going ice skating, sledding, snow boarding or skiing, building a snowman or snow fort and, of course, having a snowball fight!  You could also go for a moon walk!  Bundle up really well, grab a flash light (you might need it to see where you are going) and maybe some sort of reflective material or lights to put on your coat, get your parents to go with you and go for a walk in your neighborhood and look at the moon and all of the holiday decorations and lights.   When you are done, go inside to warm up  and have some hot chocolate!  Take time to exercise and have fun outside in the winter!

Swimming was here, now it’s gone!

Swimming was a lot of fun!  Too bad it can only last 2 weeks – in our case, 3 weeks, due to the Thanksgiving Break.  There was a lot of kicking and bobbing and swimming across the pool.  There was also floating and pool safety and reaching assists.  All students who swam had a good time and improved their swimming skills.  Don’t worry, we’ll be swimming again in the Spring!

Now that swimming is over the skill to practice is basketball dribble!  Did you know that Lebron James was once in elementary school and he wasn’t very good at dribbling the basketball?  How did he get better?  HE PRACTICED!!!!!!  Don’f forget that in order to get better at anything you need to practice!

2nd – 5th grades will also be graded on their jump rope skills, so we will be PRACTICING jumping rope in PE Class!

Now, you know I’m always telling you to eat more fruits and vegetables, right?  Did you know you should have 8 helping of fruits and veggies every day??  A good place to get them is at lunch!!  If you get your lunch at school, Miss Gloria and Miss Kathy always put out FRUITS AND VEGETABLES at every lunch.  When they give you your lunch just keep walking and there they are!  If you bring a lunch to school, instead of chips, ask Mom to include a fruit and vegetable in your lunch everyday!  YUM!!

Also – the snacks provided every day are either a fruit or vegetable.  Eat them!  Try something new!!
