I hope everyone has a safe and happy summer!  You have homework – PLAY outside every day and BE ACTIVE!!

Try new things: Eat a new fruit or vegetable, grow vegetables, read a book, go to a farmers market and get fresh grown fruits and veggies, go swimming and take swim lessons, read a book, go to the park or the beach, but don’t forget to wear sunscreen!  Go to a Tigers Game! Play beach volleyball, read a book, enter and run in a race, go to a concert in the park, attend a summer festival, read a book, go to Camp Dearborn!

Whatever you do, stay active and I’ll see you in the Fall!

Only 64 days until Spring!!!

Happy Tuesday!

Spring is March 20th!  Only 64 more days of winter!  I am ready for warmer weather.  I am also ready for more consistent sunshine!  I always feel more energetic when it’s sunny outside.  I know getting exercise during the winter is hard, but there are many things you can do to add movement to your day.  If you have stairs in your house, you can walk up and down them 10 times, you can make exercise challenges with your brothers or sisters or parents, you can exercise to wii tennis, you can play catch with a sock ball or volleyball with a balloon.  Or………..you can bundle up and go outside and play in the snow or walk around the block.  Use your imagination!!!!  Moving your body during the winter gives you more energy and it stimulates your brain.

Sooooooooooooooooo…………………GET MOVING!!!

WELCOME BACK!!!!!

Hello, students and welcome back to Henry Ford Elementary School!!  It was a wonderful…and quick summer!!!  I hope you had fun and kept physically active!  I ran a lot-I even ran around Mackinac Island-that’s 8 miles! I ran a couple of races, traveled Up North and read a lot of books! I love to read!!!  I also had a garden and I’m still bringing tomatoes in my lunch!

We are off to a good start this year.  I see lots of familiar faces and also, lots of new faces!  Each grade has their own curriculum but one thing is common with all grades this 1st marking period is the instep kick.

Lower grades will work on locomotor skills, too: Kindergarten and 1st grade will be learning how to and get better at hopping and 2nd grade will be working on the gallop.  Third grade will be reviewing all locomotor skills.  4th and 5th grades will be working on their fitness.  4th grade will be assessed on the 13 min. continuous run (without walking) and the 5th grade will be assessed on the 15 min.continuous run (without walking).  All grades will be graded on sportsmanship.

In addition to the skills being learned in P.E. (Physical Education) Class, there will be other opportunities in which the 4th and 5th graders can participate.  They will receive a letter to take home if they are interested.

The first is Running Club.  This is a club that meets at 7:50 in the morning, one day a week, beginning at the end of September.  We meet throughout the year and then run in a race called the Martian Marathon.  This is a COMMITMENT!  Runner must come every week or they will be dropped from the club.  The other opportunity to Run will be the Robert Cipriano Run in October.  There is a small fee of $3, but it is a fun run and parents will be able to watch their child participate.

I’m looking forward to a great year!!!!

Kickball, whiffleball and swimming

We’ve had a few cloudy and rainy days this week.  That’s no fun when you want to play outside!  Hopefully, sunshine will be back next week!  If you have a chance, go swimming at the Civic Center across the street!  They also have basketball courts and a climbing wall.  The rain won’t bother you there.

Well, testing is just about over and some classes are already done!  Once a class has completed their assessments, we will be playing games.  Two of those games are: kickball and whiffleball.  K – 4th grade will be playing kickball.  Kind of like a baseball game, but using a kickball.  Whiffleball is also like baseball, but we use a plastic bat and a plastic ball with holes in it.!  Both games are exciting and lots of fun!!!

Healthy tidbit:  Healthy snacks helps to keep your brain ready to  learn!  Do you know what the healthy snack “ants on a log” is???

Testing is almost finished and we start swimming next week!

The pool is waiting for the 4th and 5th Graders!

Happy May Day!  Ahhhhh…warmer days and beautiful flowers!

We are continuing skill testing in all grades.  We should be done by the end of the week!

4th and 5th grades will begin swimming next Monday in PE Class!!!

-Remember, girls – I am selling swim caps for $4.00.  Please try to bring exact change.  You can wear a bathing suit, an arabic swim suit or a long sleeved t-shirt, long stretchy pants and a scarf  Hopefully, you will have a swim cap to keep your hair dry. Also-don’t forget a big towel for the clips and a smaller towel to dry off.  You can bring flip flops for the showers if you want.

Boys-don’t forget-your bathing suit has to have the liner in the suit (kind of looks like mesh underwear).  Don’t forget a towel and bring flip flops if you want.

Healthy Tidbit: Swimming is one of the best exercises around.  It doesn’t cost much-you just need a bathing suit.  It is good for your heart – your heart beats fast when you swim! And it’s easy on your joints-you swim on top of the water.  No wonder it’s one of the most popular ways to exercise. Soooooo….get out there at take swim lessons this summer.  You can take lessons indoors, at the Civic Center, or outdoors at the outdoor pools in Dearborn.  Call the Recreation Department at 313-943-2350 for more information!
