Have a sunny day!

Hi! Are you staying active everyday?

Hello, boys and girls! Have you seen my short video on Class Dojo? If you haven’t, check it out. I’m doing my best, also, to keep active every day. It keeps me healthy, helps me to focus on the things I need to do and it makes me feel good!!! Please, Please – check out the Class links on this page. They are FUN activities! You should also be checking out your teacher’s lesson plans. The Special area teacher’s spot is near the bottom of your teacher’s plans. All grades have a weekly calendar of activities. You should be following those and filling them out!

Here are 3 activities I thought you could do outside, weather permitting.

1- Play TREE TAG with a family member. Each of you stand on the opposite side of a larger tree. Decide who is “it” first (rock, paper, scissors, shoot one time). One of you says “pickle” and the person who is “it” slides sideways around the tree and tries to tag the other person, the other person tries to get away. Once the other person gets tagged they are it and the game continues. You must stay within 3 feet of the tree trunk, and remember-don’t play this game with a tree near the street!

2 – MORE SQUARES – Start jogging down your sidewalk. Count each sidewalk square you jog over. See how many squares you can jog over without walking. Then walk 50 squares to catch your breath, then try again and see if you can jog more squares. Do the about 5 times and then do it again the next day and see if you can increase the amount of squares that you can jog without stopping.

3 – JUMPING JACK AND JILL – This is basically the same activity as MORE SQUARES except you can do it while jumping rope! If you don’t have a rope you can: 1-Buy one on line (make sure it’s like the kind we use in PE Class), 2-Use a piece of rope you have at home (measure it like we do in PE Class and add 6″, then tie a know on the end), or 3-Make one out of plastic bags (knot them together and make the right length).

CHECK OUT HOW TO MAKE A JUMP ROPE OUT OF PLASTIC BAGS UNDER CLASS LINKS ON THE RIGHT HAND SIDE OF THIS PAGE!

I’ll keep in touch everyday, so check back tomorrow for more ways to stay active!

Information about your PE Class

Hello, students! Information and plans for Physical Education are posted for you at the bottom of your teacher’s weekly plans. Although we may not be able to do the exact same things that we have been doing in PE Class, the important thing now is that you stay active! You should be active for 60 minutes per day! You do not have to do it all at once, but with the log in my and Ms. Beck’s lesson plans, you can be active everyday. With the weather getting warmer, we are encouraging you to go outside with your families and do things together like: ride bikes or scooters (no, we don’t mean electric scooters), go for walks, play on the playground equipment, race each other from here to there, play throw and catch, jump rope- have contests with each other – who can do the most. Your body needs to move EVERYDAY FOR 60 MINUTES!!!

Ms. Beck and I will be adding more things to do as the days and weeks go along so check back and see what we’ve done.

I miss all of you, but we all need to be safe and healthy. So I have this to say to you:

***Drink lots of water

***Eat healthy food – that means LOTS of vegetables and fruits.

***Get plenty of sleep.

***KEEP ACTIVE – AT LEAST 60 MINUTES PER DAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

and remember….KEEP SMILING AND HAVE A SUNNY DAY!!!

Whitmore-Bolles Elementary closed as precaution after potential COVID-19 exposure of staff member

Dearborn Public Schools announced Wednesday evening that Whitmore Bolles Elementary School would be closed, at least temporarily, after a staff member came in contact with someone with a confirmed case of COVID-19.

Superintendent Dr. Glenn Maleyko said the move was “out of an overabundance of caution,” as the District and the staff member await the results of tests to see if the person had contracted COVID-19.

No other Dearborn Public School closings are planned at this time.

As of the Wednesday evening, Whitmore Bolles was closed only for Thursday.  Officials hope to have the results of the person’s COVID-19 test by Thursday afternoon.  Then a decision will be made about reopening.  The staff person only worked at Whitmore Bolles.  No other information was released because of privacy concerns for the employee.

“The impact of the COVID-19 virus is a very dynamic and fluid situation.  How we address this today may not be the same practice or protocol for future cases,” Dr. Maleyko said during a press conference at the District’s Administrative Services Center on Wednesday evening. “We are in constant contact with public health officials at Wayne County, the State of Michigan, and the Center for Disease Control.  We will continue to work directly with them and follow their recommendations on containing the spread of the COVID-19 virus.”

Dr. Maleyko said it was his decision to close the school, although the health department felt the risk to the students and staff was very low.  If the staff person is shown to have the virus, the District would likely be directed by the Wayne County Health Department on how to proceed.

Speakers at the press conference included Maleyko, Communications Director David Mustonen, and Board President Hussein Berry.

“I can speak from the heart as a father and grandfather in this district.  I am extremely confident that the decision made today was the right decision,” Mr. Berry said.  He encouraged people to get current information from the District website, and not to rely on reports on social media.

The district will use Thursday to ensure the school has a deep cleaning, using both District staff and an outside company familiar with dealing with germs.

Meanwhile, Dr. Maleyko reiterated common sense advice on slowing the spread of all viruses, including washing hands thoroughly or using hand sanitizer, coughing and sneezing into a tissue or an arm, and staying home if you are sick.

The District has fielded questions about converting to online learning.  While Dearborn Schools has long supported online learning, it cannot quickly convert to entirely virtual schools.  Any such change could also hurt students, especially low-income children who may not have ready access to suitable technology or internet to complete lessons from home.

Maleyko also was asked about parents who opt to keep their children at home.

“I always say that parents always have the right to make a decision in the best interest of their family and their child,” Maleyko said.  “We have no other information that leads us to believe we have any other risks any other Dearborn Public Schools at this time.”

Obviously the situation with the virus is evolving, and any decisions on further school closings will be made on a case-by-case basis, the Superintendent said.

Maleyko said, “We come here today not to alarm, panic or create stress, but to demonstrate our team’s readiness to address this concern and be prepared.  We come here today as a team because the task of planning and preparing is not the decision of one person, but requires the expertise and skills of all of us,” Maleyko said.

Dearborn Public Schools will continue to post information about any response to COVID-19 on our website at www.dearbornschools.org.

We are swimming!

4th and 5th grade students are swimming during their PE classes this week and next week (Dec 9 – Dec. 20, 2019)!!! It is an exciting time! Students should remember to bring swim suits, one big and one smaller towel, swim caps (girls) and 2 grocery (Kroger, Walmart, Target, Meijer) bags for their wet swim clothes. All students will be wearing life jackets during swim class. During this swim time we will be working on getting used to being in and around the water, the proper way to kick and proper arm form when swimming. This is not a full swim course, so please don’t assume your child will know how to swim after our swim class if they did not know how to swim before the class. However, they should feel more comfortable and excited to take swim lessons. I highly encourage parents to sign up their children to take swim lessons. Swim lessons are taught during the year through the Dearborn Schools Community Education program ( call 313 827-1900) and through the City of Dearborn Recreation Department at the Center(call 943-2350).

Let it Snow!

Well! I can’t believe we had a snow day in November! I hope you had a fun day off! Hopefully, you had fun outside – shoveling the snow, making snow angels, having a snowball fight, sledding or snowboarding or just going for a walk in the snow. Please make sure you are bundled up – heavy winter coat, scarf, hat, mittens and, of course, BOOTS! And speaking of boots, please wear boots to school on cold or snowy days. They are made to keep your feet warm while you are outside, BUT, also remember to bring shoes (and on PE Day bring your gym shoes) in a bag. Boots are not made to be worn indoors for long periods of time. They track in snow and salt from the outside and make it slippery in the halls or messy on the carpet. Wearing boots indoors will cause your feet to sweat and actually your feet will be colder outside if you have sweaty feet. Don’t forget what happens to your feet when they sweat in your boots – they are smelly! So do everyone a favor and wear boots to school, but bring shoes in a bag to change into once you get ot school. Thank you!
