Good food choices + daily physical activity = a healthy life. The choices you make can either help or hurt your health. Here are 5 simple ways for your family to lead a healthy life:
– Get moving each day! 60 minutes is recommended, but it doesn’t have to happen all at once or be the same activity. Activities should include vigorous activities. Parents can be role models by being active, also.
– Choose water as a drink! It’s a great way to quench your thirst and it doesn’t come with added sugar found in pop, fruit juice drinks or other sweetened drinks. It also doesn’t have added sodium found in sports drinks such as gatorade. Milk is a great drink and a great source of calcium.
– Eat more fruits and vegetables! Eating fruits and veggies every day helps to provide the body with vitamins and minerals to help kids grow and develop. Have fruits and veggies available in your house for a quick snack and try to include fruits and veggies with every meal.
– Turn off the TV, computer, i pad and cell phone apps and get active! Kids and teens should spend no more that1 – 2 hours a day on “electronic entertainment”. There are many other things to do – read a book, do homework, draw or color, write in a journal, go outside for a walk. Go to the Civic Center or Hype, play a game. I’m sure you can think of many other ways to have some fun.
– Eat fewer snack and make healthier snack choices! Healthy snacks give kids vitamins and fiber. Snacks from the fruit, vegetable, dairy and grain groups are the healthiest choices
