I am sorry for the late notice on this. If you would like to order a new reading bag for your child, please send in $6.00 by Friday, September 30. If your child has a bag from first grade, they are welcome to bring it in. It is also fine to continue to use the striped cloth reading bag.
Thank you for the Scholastic Book orders!
Also, thank you for the Kleenex and soap donations. It is greatly appreciated!

We will be reading many poems this week at reading time.
In math, we are continuing to practice number patterns (counting by 2’s, 5’s, and 10″s), number grids with +1, -1, +10, -10, comparing numbers (25<36, 235>124), and building numbers with base 10 blocks. Please practice counting patterns with your child at home. This can be done orally in the car or anytime!
We will be doing a fun activity this week exploring matter in science.
It’s is all about our community in social studies. Please point out businesses, the city hall, the library, the parks etc. as you are traveling around town with your child.
Please continue to encourage your child to be a good listener at school.
We will be taking the NWEA math and reading test this week. Please be sure your child gets a good nights sleep.
Weekly Spelling Words
Pattern words – CVC -consonant, vowel, consonant
pet, ten, pot, cup, job
Sight words – help, not, up, funny, red
Students will get 5 additional words on the test that follow the weekly pattern. Practice by choosing words that rhyme with the pattern words.
I will be sending home a short math and spelling homework on Tuesday and Thursday this week.
Each week, students will have 10 spelling words to practice. Five words are spelling pattern words. Five words are sight words (these are words students need to be able to read just by looking at them and not sounding them out). On the test on Friday, students will get five additional words that follow the spelling pattern for the week. The goal is for students to generalize the pattern.
The spelling pattern this week is the consonant, vowel, consonant pattern with short vowel sounds of a and i.
Our pattern words are can, sat, win, fit, did (students will get 5 additional words on the test that follow this pattern)
Our sight words are look, said, has, six, big
Please have your child study these words daily as well as read.
I hope to meet you at Open House on Thursday, September 15, from 6:00 – 7:30. We are in room 211.

Welcome to second grade at Henry Ford School! I am excited to be your child’s teacher this year. We had a terrific first day of school today! We will be doing many fun activities this year in our classroom from apple activities on Halloween to Thanksgiving plays in November to gingerbread houses in the December and fairy tale plays in the spring.
We have a nice group of students. We also have a helper this year, Mrs. Rodriguez. I look forward to a very productive year with this class!
