DCMST Applications are In – Deadline is Feb 8!!
DEARBORN CENTER FOR MATH, SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY (DCMST). The Dearborn Center for Math, Science and Technology is a community of learners sharing a high interest in math, science & technology. The 4 year program provides enrichment and acceleration through a hands-on problem solving approach that integrates computer applications with math and science. Students can individualize their program by choosing a problem for advanced research and by enrolling in college courses in their junior and senior years.

Counseling Office Information Center
- Just Arrived: Stop in the counseling office and pick up the federal government’s booklet on “online safety.” You can also review other information handouts as well!
- Don’t forget to send in your canned/non perishable contribution to your child’s Advisor class!
Thanks to Parents Mr. & Mrs. Adam for recreating our information cubbie into a Turnstyle to hold important information for parents and students.

Welcome Smith Families
If you did not make it to Smith’s Open House last week, we hope to see you at Parent-Teacher Conferences on October 26 & 28. Prior to conferences you can access your information by contacting your child’s teacher or counselor through Parent Connect. Parent Connect will also allow you to check on your child’s attendance and any updates that may have been posted by teachers.
The counseling office will soon be updating available Resources in reception area. You can walk in and help yourself beginning October 1st. A resource that is currently available is a free reading tutorial program. Please email or stop in the counseling office for an account username and password.

Middle School Seal of Biliteracy begins at Smith
The Dearborn Public Schools will once again take the lead on providing students with innovative programs designed to prepare them for post-secondary education and the workforce. The Board of Education approved a district wide program, starting as early as elementary school, allowing all students to earn a Seal of Biliteracy upon completion of high school.
Students who attain the Seal will be honored at their senior honors convocation where they will receive a certificate and an emblem to be worn at commencement. The Seal will be placed on the students’ diploma and will be noted on their official transcripts.
Starting in the elementary grades students will have multiply pathways to take in order to achieve and demonstrate language proficiency.
Middle School – Commitment
- Complete world language course with minimum grade of B or pass district Level 1-Test Out exam
- Score proficient on 8th grade state Language Arts test
- Score proficient on state English proficiency test
- 1 page essay in each language: “Why is knowing multiple languages important?”
- Oral presentation in language other than English
Students will given Information in group counseling sessions. Information is also available in the counseling office.

Summer Speed Reading Program
University of Detroit-Mercy is again offering their Summer in Dearborn & On Campus Reading Program. Speed reading can increase reading speed, improve concentration, and build vocabulary. Tuition varies by program. An information flyer is available in the counseling office and is also attached.
