Purpose of the Course
The purpose of the course is to provide the student who has little or no background the opportunity to prepare for general chemistry at the post-secondary level. In addition, this course is a Michigan graduation requirement that is based on the Michigan Merit Curriculum. Many of the above units are SAT readiness standards which SAT recommends..
Some of the topics covered are:
- Scientific inquiry/ engineering design
- Energy transfer
- Structure and properties of matter
- Chemical reactions
- Stoichiometry
- Radiation
- Earth’s systems
Attendance: refer to school attendance policy.
- A Student who attains 10 or more absences will go an audit. An audit means that a student will earn half the credit allowed in case he or she passes the class.
- The audit status will be removed only if a student receives 78% on the final cumulative exam.
Methods
Course work will be delivered in several ways: Inquiry based strategies, Reading Apprenticeship (such as talking to the text, double journal entry, SIOP, Thinking maps, 6+1 writing prompts, lecture notes, discussions, Lab Experiments, In class assignments, homework assignments, group experiments, demonstration, comprehensive lab reports, quizzes, exams, projects.

Grading scale
93-100% = A 87%-89.9%=B+ 77 – 79.9% = C+ 67 – 69.9% = D+
90-92.9%= A- 83%-86.9%= B 73%-76.9%= C 63%-66.9%=D
80% – 82.9% = B- 70%-72.9%= C- 60%-62.9%= D-
59.9% OR below E
Formative Assessment (20% of overall grade)
Classwork Assignments
Assignments’ points will be assigned 6 points each.
Bell work: Each Bell work will be worth 5 points per week. If you are tardy, you are still required to do the Bell work but will not receive the points.
Summative Assessment (80% of overall grade)

- Make-Up tests and quizzes will be administered after school the day the student get back and within one week of the original one.
- Late Work: Partial credit may be deducted when turned in late.
- Absent work: It’ s your responsibility to check for your missed work. Refer to the blog or ilearn for handouts and homework assignments. Retakes:
- Only one retake per summative assessment is allowed.
- A student should request a retake after showing effort, which might include test corrections, caught-up homework.
- The student’s arranging with the teacher for retake.
- Completion of the retake within a reasonable time frame, e.g. within 1-2 weeks of the original summative assessment.
- Retakes may be in a different format from the original summative assessment.
- End-of-semester exams cannot be retaken.
Electronic Devices:
- Cell phones, iPods, MP3 players, Earphones etc. must be put on silent and placed in the caddy located in the front of the classroom. The use of such devices is considered insubordination and will be sent to the office.
Cheating :
If cheating occurs on formative assignments, the student will have to redo the original assignment and he or she will be assigned additional work.
- If cheating occurs on summative assignments, the student will receive a zero the first attempt, and if plagiarism continues to happen, the student will be referred to the office for disciplinary action as stated in the student code of conduct.
- Cheating will result in a loss of being nominated for a valedictorian status.
- NO HALL PASSES TO BE GIVEN UNLESS IT’S AN EMERGENCY!
- Only water is permitted in class. No food, soft drinks, or gum chewing will be allowed in class.
