Special Education Students at Snow

This month our students learned more about our Snow School students who have a special education eligibility.  We have 5 classrooms at Snow that are self-contained special education classrooms.  While students in these classrooms learn differently, we are more alike than we are different.  It is up to us as leaders to make sure everyone feels included.  Saying or waving hello, offering a compliment,  helping a student who may have fallen are just a few ways we can connect with students who learn differently.  We can also help students learn social behaviors by modeling good behavior.  When we witness students making a bad choice we can tell them a better choice they could make.  We can also try to understand that if we see challenging behavior, it may be out of that student’s control or part of their disability.  Empathy is the ability to put ourselves into someone else’s shoes.  Questions you may want to ponder at home to further this discussion:  How would life change if  I had a disability?  What would I need to help me learn?  How would I want others to treat me?  Everyone wants to feel included and it is our hope to make sure that we are showing kindness and empathy so that everyone feels included.

Late Start and Marble Jar party

Just a reminder that this Wednesday, November 16th is a Late Start.   The first bell will ring at 9:35 a.m.

Congratulations to the class for filling our Marble Jar.  Our celebration will be this Friday afternoon.  Students voted today on what they would like as their reward.  The majority of votes were for root beer floats and game day.  I will provide all of the items for the root beer floats and students may bring in games from home to play.  Please make sure all games are properly labeled with your child’s name.  Any electronic games must be kept in backpacks or at the teacher’s desk until the celebration begins.  Great job class!

Family Turkey Projects

Information for Family Turkey Projects went home on Friday.  All turkeys and writing are due this Friday, November 18th.

Week of November 14-18

Spelling words (/ar/ and /or/ patterns):  cheddar, narrator, guitar, elevator, aviator

Academic words:  narrative, informational, opinion, drama, scene

Thank you to those parents that already attended parent teacher conferences last week.  The remainder of the class has a scheduled conference either this Wednesday, November 16th or Thursday, November 17th.  Please refer to the previous email with dates and times that families have already signed up for.  Please arrive at your scheduled time.  If you are late, you will have to wait until I have an opening in the schedule.

We have completed the unit in S.S. on the U.S. in Spatial Terms.  We will begin the next unit on Human Geography of the U.S. this week.

We have completed the unit in Science on Heat, Electricity, and Magnetism.  We will begin the next unit on Properties and Changes of Matter this week.

Please continue to have your child read every night and fill in their Weekly Reading Log.  All logs are to be turned in every MONDAY.  It is your child’s responsibility to go onto MyOn to record his/her current Lexile Score.  If you are unable to do this at home, your child needs to take the responsibility to look it up during the Listen to Reading time during Daily 5.

We will begin our monthly PBIS celebrations the end of November.  In order for students to attend the November celebration, they can have no more than 3 card flips for the entire month and no ODR referrals to the office.  Students who do not earn the privilege of attending the celebration will be participating in a re-thinking group of how to change their behavior for the December celebration.

Just a reminder that there is no school Wednesday, November 23- Friday, November 25 due to the Thanksgiving Holiday.

Snow School Skate Night is scheduled for Tuesday, November 22nd.  More information will be sent home soon from the PTA.

Achievements Showcase

WORK HARD AND BE PROUD OF YOUR ACHIEVEMENTS Showcase:

Dear Students and Families of Snow School,

There are many wonderful milestones that have been accomplished by our students at school and in our community.  As part of our Leader in Me Program, we would like to showcase these milestones.  If your son/daughter individually, or as part of your family, a group or a team, has risen to the next level in anything-sports/reading/volunteering, etc., or  has shown great leadership, participated in charity events, helps out at Scouts, church, or in another way, please send in documentation and we will post these in our new showcase for Leadership.  Items, with names!!!, should be sent to Mrs. Zechar.  Your items will be returned after the month they have been posted.  If we get a lot of entries we might have to hold on to yours for a bit before it gets posted.  Thanks for your help in celebrating our Snow School Community!
