Spelling Tests in Google Classroom do not allow parents to see what their child spelled incorrectly. It only allows you to see what their final score is. As a parent, I know that I like to be able to see what my child got wrong. Therefore, I will be going back to our original way of taking written spelling tests starting this Friday. Sometimes technology isn’t the best way of doing things:)
Tomorrow, October 31st is our Halloween Party. The following families have already signed up on our SignUp Genius to donate food/items: Khan, Davis, Stratford, Aljahmi, Kerr, Jammoul. Thank you to these families. Please do NOT send in any food items unless you are one of the families that signed up. We will not have time or room in our stomachs to eat anything extra. If you did not sign up for this party, you will have the opportunity to sign up for future parties. Your child may bring in goody bags or candy to pass out to the classroom. Students will NOT be able to deliver treats/candy to other classrooms or teachers. If you would like to deliver a special treat to another teacher, you will have to do so after school. Students will be watching a Halloween movie, enjoy our treats, and do a small craft project. Students are allowed to wear costumes to school. Please make sure there are no weapons, masks, or excessive face paint. Students will not be able to change into their costumes at school, so it is important for all students in our class to get dressed in the morning and wear their costumes to school. I will post a class photo of the students in the costumes at the end of the day.
5th grade Band is every Monday and Wednesday. Monday is woodwinds at 12:45 (flutes, clarinets, saxophones) and brass at 1:30 (trumpets and trombones). Wednesday is strings (violins) at 12:45 and percussion (drums) at 1:30. It is important that your child bring their instrument to school on the correct day.
Reminder that this Friday, November 3rd is a half day of school. School will be dismissed at 11:45 a.m.
The end of the first marking period is this Friday, November 3rd. Please make sure your child has turned in all late/missing assignments by Friday morning. Missing assignments will effect students’ grades on report cards.
Parent Teacher Conferences are scheduled for November 9th, 15th, and 16th. Please go back to my previous blog to see what day/time you signed up for. If you have not signed up yet, please contact me as soon as possible to pick a day and time. Please make sure to arrive on time on the correct day. If you arrive late, you will have to wait until there is an opening in my schedule. Parents will receive their child’s report card and NWEA scores at conferences.
Reminder that Weekly Reading Logs are due EVERY MONDAY! Students who do not return their logs will be walking the track during outside recess.
Students should be reading and writing every day according to their list of assignments in the Reading Bags. Many students are not keeping up, and this will effect their grades. Students should read the assigned pages/chapter each day and choose a written response to write in their response notebooks. The written responses should vary from day to day and should average 1/2 page each. Some students are choosing the same activity every day and some are only writing one sentence. Please check your child’s Reading Bag and response notebook to make sure they are completing their work and following directions.
Parents should be checking their child’s Student Planner on a daily basis and signed the planner every day. Many families are doing a great job, while others have not had a parent signature in weeks. This is an important tool for communication and is a responsibility of every child in class.
Book Fair: All for Books Campaign
We are doing our All for Books Campaign again this year during our Scholastic Book Fair. All the money raised will go directly towards buying more books for the school (such as the Library and Classrooms). We are asking families to please collect any loose change from home, put in a baggie and bring to their class. We will collect from each class first thing Friday morning. The class that raises the most money will get the chance to wrap Mrs. Alcodray up like a mummy!!!
Make a Wish Pumpkin Fundraiser
Hello Snow School Community! We are doing our annual Make A Wish Fundraiser by raffling off 29 expertly designed pumpkins. Each ticket is 25 cents. All the money raised goes to the Michigan Chapter of the Make A Wish Foundation. Tickets are on sale until Monday, October 30, in the morning. All tickets have to be in the art room by 11:15 to be processed for the final drawings. NO exceptions! There will be 29 lucky winners, but we actually all win because our donation goes to a very worthy cause. I would like to THANK all of the staff that decorated this year! They are FABULOUS!

Last week the spelling test was given on Google Classroom. We will continue to try it this way for a few weeks to see how it works out. Unfortunately, there is no way for the Google Form to let you know what words your child spelled incorrectly. You can go onto Google Classroom to find the total correct out of 100%. Any student who receives below a passing grade (70%) on a weekly spelling test will be required to do spelling homework the following week. Spelling homework is a list of 9 choices and students must pick 3 activities to complete at home and turn in on Friday.
Both 4th and 5th grade have finished their units in Math about comparing numbers. 4th graders will begin discussing addition and subtraction up to 4 digits and 5th graders will begin discussing multiplication and division using multiply digits.
5th graders have a S.S. quiz tomorrow (Tuesday) with Mr. DeSantis. He sent home a sheet of vocabulary words that students need to know on the quiz last Friday. Students should bring home their S.S. notebooks to help them study.
4th grade students have an assignment for Science with Mrs. Majetic on ReadWorks. Students will go to www.readworks.org. If they need to enroll with a class code, the code for Mrs. Majetic’s science is XXPNBT. Please read the article and answer the questions on a computer or tablet.
There is NO book check out this week due to the Book Fair being in the Media Center. Our class will attend the Book Fair this Thursday, October 26th at 10:00 a.m. Please make sure to send money to school with your child on Thursday if they plan on purchasing items.
Snow School’s Halloween Celebration is Thursday, October 26th from 6:00-7:30 p.m. There will be a costume contest with $1.00 entry fee. Please NO MASKS OR FAKE WEAPONS. Music, activities, and games will be in the gym and the bake sale will be in the cafeteria. A rack will be provided outside the office for baked good donations. Please come join us for an evening of Spooky fun!

Spelling Tests
Today we tried taking our spelling tests on the chromebooks under Google Classroom. Each student typed in their responses under “5th Grade Spelling” or “4th Grade Spelling” under Google Classroom. The computer then checks their tests and returns the scores to the students. I have emailed each parent a request to join the Google Classroom for Spelling so you can see your child’s grade at home.

Students who have received a “4” or “3” on their Math Quiz/Test have the option of doing test corrections to improve their scores. Directions will be sent home attached to your child’s quiz/test. It is the child’s responsibility to turn these items in to the teacher.
Please remember to turn in your Weekly Reading Logs every MONDAY. There are copies on my blog if your child loses theirs throughout the week. I will no longer accept hand written forms. Any student who does not return their log on Monday will have to walk the track during recess.
Reminder that this Wednesday, October 18th is a Late Start day. The first bell will ring at 9:35 a.m.
Reminder that children should not be dropped off earlier than 8:25 in the morning. Students must go directly to their line on the playground with no playing on the playground.
Thank you to the families that have signed up for treats for our Halloween party. All of our slots have been filled. If you have not signed up, please do NOT send in extra treats as we will have too much to eat and things may end up being thrown away. You can sign up for a future party if you’d like to.
Reminder that PICTURE DAY is tomorrow (Tuesday). If you’ve lost your order form, there are extras in the office.
Student Planners
I have noticed that many students are not filling out their Student Planners correctly. Here is a copy of this week’s Student Planner that was displayed on the board at the end of every day for students to copy. Talk with your child about correctly filling out their planners so the parents can check them every night. Thank you!
