NWEA/MAP Assessments Window, January 8 – February 2, 2018

January 8, 2018

Dear Parents/Guardians:

During the weeks of January 8 – February 2, 2018 your child will take the NWEA/ MAP.  This is our fourth year that we have used this test. The results of this test are / and will be used to determine your child’s instructional level and to measure academic growth throughout the school year, and from year to year. Each test will take approximately 40 to 60 minutes to complete and will be administered on different days (Please see teacher blogs for testing schedules).  Measurements of Academic Progress (MAP®) tests are unique in that they adapt to your child’s appropriate level of learning. As a result, each student has the same opportunity to succeed and maintain a positive attitude toward school.

The MAP® test is administered three times a year; fall, winter and spring.  For more information on resources for parents, download the Parent Toolkit at www.nwea.org

Please talk to your child to take her/his time and do his/her best. On the NWEA/MAP  students will be tested on the following subjects:

  • Kindergarten 1st Grade and 2nd grade students are tested in Math and Reading
  • 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students are tested in Math, Reading, Language, Science

Please remind your child of the following test-taking tips.

Before the Test:

*Develop a positive attitude. Tell yourself, “I will do my best on this test.”

*Get a good night’s sleep the night before the test.

*Get up early enough to avoid rushing to get to school on time.

*Eat a healthy breakfast.

During the Test:

*Relax and Stay calm.

*Listen carefully to the directions the teacher gives.

*Ask questions if you do not understand what to do.

*Read each question carefully. Find the key words. Try to figure out what the question is really asking.

*Read the entire question and look at ALL the answer choices before you make your answer choice.

*Use strategies you learned in class to figure out the answer.

*Take your time!

Please encourage and motivate your child by letting him/her know that the formula for success is: taking your time and doing your best.

All students Science Fair projects are due MONDAY, FEBRUARY 5th.  If you have not begun your experiments, it is important to start as soon as possible because you should have multiple (3) trials for the topic that your child chose.

Reading Bags will begin again on Tuesday, January 9th.  I need time to collect the assignments from before the break and get new reading material ready for all groups.  Students are still expected to read and fill in their Weekly Reading Log tonight.

Reminder that there is a Late Start this Wednesday, December 20th.  The first bell will ring at 9:35 a.m.

There will be no Reading Bag homework over the Holiday Break, however students are expected to continue reading at home every day.  They should also go onto Moby Max over the break and work on both Math and Reading (literature and informational).  The goal would be at least one hour per week in both subject areas.

School will be closed for the winter break from December 25-January 5.  School will reopen on Monday, January 8, 2018!

Genius Hour Projects are due on Monday

For the past 4 weeks, students have been researching a topic of their choice during what our class calls “Genius Hour”.  Students are given time every Friday to research a topic of their choice then create a presentation on their topic.  The directions can be found in Google Classroom if your child has lost their paper.  They must choose to create a Google Doc, a 2-3 minute speech, a poster, or a Google SlideShow about their topic.  All projects are due on Monday, December 18th.  We will begin sharing our projects in class all of next week.  After the holiday break, students will choose a new topic to research during Genius Hour.

Snow Day Thursday

It’s official, school will be closed tomorrow (Thursday) for a Snow Day! Stay warm and enjoy spending time with your families!

You may pick up your child early today due to the snow

Hello All,
Due to the severe weather predicted for this afternoon, (12/13/17) all after school activities will be cancelled in the Dearborn Public Schools. This includes athletics, childcare programs, adult and community education, building permits, and other events specific to individual schools.
All schools will remain open today and close at their regular time. Parents have the option to pick up their child early. Any student who is picked up by their parent or legal guardian will be given an excused absence. High school students will only be allowed to leave early if a parent or legal guardian contacts the school.
Normal bus routes will operate but may run late. All extracurricular busses for activities will be cancelled.
Thank you
