NWEA Parent Letter
Dear Parents/Guardians,
The Michigan Department of Education requires all students to complete a benchmark assessment for Reading and Math within the first 9 weeks of school and Kdg-3 grade within the first 30 days. In Dearborn Schools, we use the NWEA Measures of Academic Progress to fill this requirement. Given our current situation, these assessments may be administered remotely. Teachers will set up testing sessions and guide students through logging into the assessments. Students are expected to complete the assessments independently. Some students may be coming to the school for assessment in groups of 3 or fewer.
The NWEA is, as the name suggests, a measure of progress not performance. Your child is measured against their previous performance in order to measure growth. The assessment also provides specific information about your child’s strengths and areas for growth. This enables teachers to focus instruction to meet children’s direct needs and to group students with like needs for instruction.
We offer this information as a way of asking you to please allow your child to take the assessments on their own without providing input or prompting. For Kindergarten and first grade, the students are read the questions and prompts. They may hear them as many times as needed. In the other grades, the reading test is a test of the child’s ability to read, decode and use context to figure out word meanings.
We appreciate your assistance and all you are doing to support us, as well as your child, during this time. We look forward to seeing all of our students safely back in their classrooms.
Letter from the new principal
Dear Parents/Guardians of Snow Elementary,
It is with great pleasure and an honor to serve you as the new principal of Snow Elementary School beginning October 1st of this year. I look forward to meeting all of you and working alongside the community. I am honored to have the opportunity to lead a school with such a rich legacy of success and so many points of pride. I have dedicated my career to the students of Dearborn for the last 16 years. I started my career as an elementary classroom teacher then moved on to an elementary resource teacher/instructional coach at Salina intermediate. I then moved on to be a middle school bilingual resource teacher and have spent the last four years as Assistant principal at Woodworth Middle School. I am eager to dedicate my skills to the Snow community.
As all of us embark on the upcoming school year we do so for the first time with high levels of uncertainty due to the current international crisis we all know as Covid-19. This has affected all of us in so many ways. Our students and community as a whole have had to encounter many hardships as a result. However, this will not deter our mission to make this school year the best one ever. I plan on working with parents, teachers, students and the entire Snow community to ensure that our students are safe and learning at high levels. Together we will continue to provide experiences that are rigorous, relevant and with relationships based on trust to prepare them for their future endeavors. As your new principal it is important to me to greet everyone who enters the school with the utmost respect. I have an open door policy and value every stakeholder’s opinion. Please feel free to contact me to discuss any concerns you may have or any points of pride you would like to share.
I look forward to our work together in the years to come and establishing a team committed to the Snow community. Please stay safe and have a great school year.
Sincerely,
Mohammad Abdelfattah
Snow Elementary Principal
NWEA Testing
Students will be taking the NWEA test for Reading and Math beginning September 28th. This test will be taken at home, however we will go over setting up computers, practice tests, and tips together this week.
Parents may NOT help their child during testing. Parents must allow students to take the test on their own. Parents should NOT sit next to your child during the test.
Greetings from Ms. Shene,
This document will help you prepare your child to take the MAP Growth test. Please be available at the following times to support your child’s testing:

What is MAP Growth? | ||
MAP Growth helps teachers understand what students know today, so goals can be set to improve growth throughout the year. Students cannot pass or fail this test. | This test will not affect grades. In fact, it’s normal for students to only answer about half the questions correctly. Please don’t help them! | Given the challenges of learning from home, MAP Growth test results are especially helpful for us this year. These results will help us know what students are ready to learn. |
