The Snow PTA is hosting a Bake Sale at the Open House on this Thursday, Sept. 12th and we need your donations! Bring in any baked good of your choice — store-bought or homemade — and the proceeds will go directly to the PTA to support our students and classrooms. A cart will be outside the office Thursday morning and donations can be brought in any time that day. Looking forward to a great night!

Spelling words Week 1: oxygen, strap, bent, umbrella, shipment, prime, staple, because, hope, rumor

Content Words: north, south, east, west, location

All Spelling will be done on our class iLearn Course. Students will sign up for the course in class today. They will have access to the spelling words, activities that must be completed by Friday. The test will be given every Friday on the iLearn Course. Parents can see their child’s score at home by having your child login to the course at home. Just go to dearbornschools.org and click on iLearn under Students.

Beginning this week, students must read at home for 30 minutes every night. Right now students may read any book of their choice. Reading bags will come home at the end of the month after we have completed our NWEA testing and I can place students in books at their current reading level. Students are expected to keep track of the number of minutes they have read each night and record it on their Weekly Reading Log sheet, which will be coming home today. At the end of the week, families must add together the total number of minutes read. The minimum total for the week is 150 minutes. Parents must sign and return the Weekly Reading Log every Monday. If a child does not return their Weekly Reading Log or does not have a parent signature on Monday, the student will walk the track as a consequence during recess for not being responsible.

Last Friday we took our Module 1 Topic A Math Quiz. These quizzes have been graded and are being sent home today. Go over the quiz with your child and review any mistakes they made on the quiz. There are no retakes on quizzes. We will have another quiz after we finish Topics B and C.

Students should be completed with their iReady Reading Diagnostic test by the end of today. Results will be passed out at Open House.

Our class will begin Reading NWEA testing Tuesday-Thursday of this week. Students will be encouraged to do their best work on this first NWEA test.

Community Eligibility Provision (CEP)

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Dearborn Public Schools will be participating in the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) as part of the National School Lunch and School Breakfast Programs for the School Year 2019-2020. All students enrolled at our school can receive a healthy breakfast and lunch and NO CHARGE.

We will still need your household to FILL OUT AND SIGN THE HOUSEHOLD INFORMATION FORM. This is CRITICAL in determining the amount of money our our school receives from State and Federal supplemental programs. All information submitted on the forms is confidential. Forms will be coming home this week.

Thank you in advance for your participation in the matter.

Have a great day.

Amal Alcodray, Principal

Week of September 3-6

I hope everyone enjoyed their extended Labor Day weekend!

Thank you to the families that have already signed up for Class Dojo. Please make sure you do so as soon as possible if you haven’t already done so. A note with instructions and the class code was sent home last week. Please contact me if you need another copy.

This week we will begin our first Diagnostic Test on iReady. This test will see what level your child is currently reading at and will assign lessons at their reading level. It usually takes 2-3 days to complete the test.

Students should be reading at home every night. A reading log will be sent home next week for students to keep track of how many minutes they have read each night. The goal is to read 150 minutes per week.

We have already begun Module 1 in Eureka Math about Place Value. You should expect your child to have math homework every night Monday-Thursday. Occasionally we do not complete an entire lesson in one day, therefore there will not be homework assigned. Please check your child’s Student Planner to see what their daily homework is.

The Student Planner is to be filled out every day by the students. Parents are to look at the Student Planner in the evening and make sure that their child has completed all assigned homework and will return any important documents to school the following day. Parents MUST sign the Student Planner every day.

Please make sure your child wears gym shoes to school every Wednesday and Thursday for physical education. You can see our full schedule on the tab on this blog.

Snow school’s first PTA meeting is this Thursday, September 5th at 7:00 p.m. in the library All parents are encouraged to attend.

Arrival procedures: On behalf of the School Administration – For the safety of our children, students should not be at school without supervision before 8:30 am (This does not apply to students participating in the Breakfast Program). Teachers will begin escorting students into the building promptly at 8:35 am on normal school days. When there is inclement weather students will be permitted to enter the building beginning at 8:25 am. The doors will remain locked until this time. It is important to understand our teachers and administrators need time to settle in and prepare for the day- they cannot be responsible for attending to children.

Please make sure you have a background check on file in the office if you plan on attending any field trips this year. Background checks are good for 3 years.

Snow Families

June 14, 2019

Dear Snow Families,

This year has flown by so quickly!

Our staff, our students, our PTA and our parent community have been so helpful.  We are so very proud of our school and have truly enjoyed the partnership and positive collaboration.

Each child is precious and each face is loved and cared for by all of us.  When your child succeeds, we are so thrilled, and when he/she struggles, we work together as a team to improve the situation.

We have done our best to make this year a year of growth, higher achievement and a safe and happy environment for all.  Teachers are working to increase the rigor in instruction while differentiating for students as needed, we have implemented PlayWorks to develop sportsmanship and social skills and we have started Unified to support inclusion and leadership. We are happy to report that our hard work has paid off!  Our Snow Overall School Index Score as reported by the state of Michigan has climbed from 72.58 to 92.63!  Snow is soaring!

To help our students continue to make progress and avoid summer loss, we are asking all Snow students to read over the summer and practice math. Our Snow Summer Challenge is for every student to do iReady for an hour per week and Zearn for one hour per week as well.  Instructions will be sent home today.

Again, on behalf of the Snow Staff, we want to express our appreciation for your efforts to support our initiatives.  We look forward to seeing you all next fall to begin another successful school year together.

We wish you all a wonderful summer, and we hope that you will always encourage your children to practice the Seven Habits of Highly Effective Leadership- always!

Sincerely,

Amal Alcodray, Principal

Snow Staff
