Field Trip – October 23rd

Dear Families,

We are all set for our field trip to Wiard’s Orchard this Thursday!  There will be many fun activities for the students to be a part of at the orchard.  They include:  roaming the corn maze, visiting the petting farm, learning at the learning barn, climbing straw mountain, playing miniature golf, enjoying a beautiful hayride and playing on the playground.  The forecast is showing 58 degrees and sunny with a 10% chance of rain.  Please have your child dress warmly.  It is important that your child wears comfortable shoes or outdoor boots.

Please send a lunch in a disposable bag with a disposable drink.  Do not send glass bottles.  It is also a good idea to have your child keep a small bottle of hand sanitizer and small packet of tissues in his/her coat pockets.

We are so thankful that many parents have offered to chaperone!

Sincerely,

The 3rd grade teachers

Spelling words (consonant blends):  black, stop, crab, blood, slip

Academic words:  sum, value, topic, observe, symbols

Please remember that your child will receive their spelling homework every Monday.  They should complete at least 3 activities at home and return the activities stapled to the sheet by Friday.

There will be a Social Studies quiz tomorrow on Michigan’s state symbols (i.e. state flower= apple blossom), vegetation of Michigan (plants that grow here), and the climate of Michigan (temperature and precipitation for the 4 seasons).  Students should bring home their S.S. folders and spiral notebooks to help them study.

Reminder that Snow School Skate Night is Thursday, October 16th from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Lincoln Park Skating Center.  Pre-sale tickets are $7.00 and tickets at the door are $9.00.  The information is coming home today.

Snow School Book Fair will be this week.  Our class already visited the book fair today and many students brought money to spend.  If your child would like to visit the book fair, they will have to stop by after school from 3:35-4:15 p.m.

For the next 2 weeks we will continue to learn about informational writing.  We are focusing on writing on how things are alike and different.  This week we are using double bubbles to compare and contrast two things, then writing a two paragraph paper to describe the similarities and differences.

Please make sure students are returning their homework on time.  Check your child’s planner on a daily basis to see what homework has been assigned.  It is important to have a parent sign and return any checked quizzes/tests as soon as possible.  These grades are used for report cards.  If you still haven’t signed up for Parent Teacher Conferences, there are still time slots left posted outside the classroom door.  If you are unable to come in to sign up, simply email me at shenew@dearbornschools.org to ask what dates and times are still available and we will set something up.  The first report cards will be passed out at conferences.

Unit 1 Math Test

The Unit 1 Math Test has been checked and will be coming home today.  Please go over the test with your child.  A parent should sign the test and return the test to school tomorrow.

Thank you:)

Student Planners

It has come to my attention that many children are not filling out their student planners.  At the end of every day, I put a copy of the student planner on the Promethean board for students to copy their homework into their own student planners.  It is the students’ responsibilities to fill in their own planners.  Please check your child’s planner every night.  Parents should be signing planners on a daily basis.  If your child has not filled anything in, they did not follow directions in class.  If nothing has been filled in by the student and a parent still signs the planner, I will not stamp it the next day.  Many children are not filling in the correct information and are not doing their homework, or are doing incorrect homework.

For example, last night’s math homework was HL 2.2 only (HomeLink 2.2).  I specifically told the class to only do HL 2.2 and NOT to do HL 2.3 on the back of the paper, since we had not learned that lesson yet.  Several students did the wrong homework or did both sides last night.  If your child did the wrong homework, I’m sending another copy home tonight for them to re-do since they did not follow directions.  As third graders, the students are capable of filling in their own planners by copying from the board and listening to directions in class.  I know this is a hard lesson to learn, but the children must become more responsible and attentive listeners.

Also, students should be reading 15-20 minutes EVERY night and have a parent sign their reading log.  Several students have not been filling in their reading logs.  If this continues, I will have to contact those families to talk about expectations as a third grader.

It is important to help the children to become responsible learners both at school and at home.  Thank you to all of the parents for keeping up with your child to make sure they are responsible students.
