Week of January 20-22

Spelling words (/kn/, /wr/):  write, wrist, wreck, knife, know

There will not be any academic spelling words this week due to the shortened week.

There will NOT be Reading Bags assigned this week due to the shortened week.

Reminder that Thursday, January 22nd is a half day.  Students will be dismissed at 11:45 a.m.  There is NO SCHOOL on Friday, January 23rd.

Snow School Skate Night is Thursday, January 22nd at Lincoln Park Skating Rink.  Tickets can be purchased in advance for $7.00 per skater or $9.00 at the door.

Many students have not been completing and turning in homework and classroom assignments.  This is effecting many students’ grades for the report card.  It is every student’s responsibility to turn in completed homework on time.  This includes filling in the Student Reading Log every Monday-Thursday.

MyOn reading website

Over the extended weekend, students should visit the MyOn.com website at least one time.  This is a program that the district has paid for that allows access to books to read online.  Students have used the website at school and should be familiar with how to access books.

Your child’s username is their 8 digit district student number.

The password is your child’s birthday.  For example, if the birth date is August 5, 2006 the password would be 08052006.  Two digits for the month, two digits for the day, and the four digit year.  Do not use spaces or hyphens.

Enjoy the extended weekend and have fun reading!

Reading Bag homework

This week’s Reading Bag assignment is to read the new folk tale book and do a written summary on the worksheet that was sent home. Since there is no school next Monday, the Reading Bag will be due next Tuesday.

Week of January 12-16

Spelling words (scr, thr, shr, spr):  scroll, throw, shrank, spring, sprain

Academic words:  hundreds, thousands, millions, government, eardrum

The PBIS party for December is tomorrow.  Students could only change their card 4 times in the month of December and have no ODR’s in order to be invited to the party.  Students will watch a movie with popcorn in the gym.  They may bring a blanket of towel to sit on if they want to be more comfortable.  Each student already knows if they are going or not.

The 5th graders are doing a special “recycled sculptures” project with Ms. Zechar.  She is looking for donations of objects that students can use to create their sculptures.  If you have anything to donate, please send it to school and we will give the items to Ms. Zechar.

The January Scholastic Book Club Order is due this Friday, January 16th.

At the beginning of the year, I had over 20 pairs of scissors in my “borrowing basket” for students to borrow then return when doing projects.  Unfortunately, I am down to only 4 pairs of scissors.  If your child borrowed any scissors, please return the scissors as soon as possible.  I am also looking for donations of child safety scissors to replace the ones that were never returned.

Reading Book Bags are due every MONDAY.  Please make sure your child returns the book and assignment on time.

Reminder that this Wednesday, January 14th is a LATE START.  The first bell will ring at 9:35 a.m.

Unit 3 S.S. Test on Wednesday, January 14th

A copy of this study guide is coming home today with your child:

Unit 3 – History of Michigan Study Guide

Wednesday, January 14th

(This test will be a cumulative test of everything we have learned about the history of Michigan.)

Students should remember the following items:

*A historian is a person who studies events from the past and provides answers to who was involved and when things happened.

*A primary source is a record made by people who saw or took place in an event (photograph, diary, newspaper article, original letter, etc.).

*A secondary source is a record written by someone who was not there at the time (textbooks).

*The Hopewell Indians were “mound builders” who built mounds to bury their dead.

*Artifacts are things from the past that are left for us to study.   Native Americans left behind arrowheads, animal teeth, and broken pottery as examples of artifacts.

*The tribes of the Three Fires were the Ojibwa, Potawatomi, and Odawa.

*Around 1500, the French began looking for silks and spices from China but found the Great Lakes instead.  They started exploring the Great Lakes region and found beavers to begin a fur trade.

*The French wanted to trade with American Indians for beaver furs because there was a scarcity of beavers in France and people there wanted beaver hats.

*The fur trade between the French and the American Indians began about 400 years ago because the American Indians wanted French goods and the French wanted beaver furs.

*French missionaries traveled to the Great Lakes region to teach their religion to people.

*The British heard about the beaver trade and wanted to take it over.  They had a war with France and the British won the war.

*Pioneers started traveling to the Michigan Territory by covered wagon.  Some of their challenges were that they had to travel across muddy land, they often got lost, they got sick along the way, and they had to clear land and build their own log cabin.

*In the early 1800’s about 5,000 people lived in the Michigan Territory.  Michigan needed a population of at least 60,000 people to become a state.

*Lewis Cass was appointed as the first governor of the Michigan Territory.

*Steamboats made it easier and safer for people to travel to the Michigan Territory.

*In 1825, a man-made waterway called the Erie Canal was built to connect the Great Lakes to the Atlantic Ocean.

*There was a conflict between Michigan and Ohio over the “Toledo Strip”.  Ohio was given the Toledo Strip and Michigan was given the Upper Peninsula.

*Michigan adopted the state’s first constitution and elected Stevens T. Mason as governor.

*Michigan became a state in 1837.

Timeline:

1600                                       1700                                       1800                                       1837

American                            Exploration                        Settlement                         Statehood

Indians

Constructed Response:

  1. Think about ways that American Indians and early pioneers used or changed the land for food and shelter.
  2. Identify two of the issues that slowed the process of Michigan becoming a state and describe the solutions to those issues.

Inside Recess

Due to the cold temperatures, the students will most likely have inside lunch recess every day this week.  Students are allowed to bring in small toys or games to play during inside recess only.
