There is a reading journal in your child’s bag.  If your child did not complete the group work in class, please have them complete it for homework.

I can’t believe September is over.  We have been very busy exploring the scientific process.  We tested how many seconds a first grader could stand on one foot.  Marwa G. and Ilyas stood on one foot for over 400 seconds.  Wow!

In Social Studies we have been studying rules and laws and appropriate consequences.  Next week we will work on what is authority and who has authority.

In Math we have been working on several concepts: counting with tally marks, numbers before, after and between other numbers, addition with objects and counting on, chart reading and graphs.  I know there is a lot to learn but so far most of the students are catching on.    The counting on strategy is just holding the big number in your head and counting up to the sum.

6 + 3=

Hold 6 in your head and count 3 more.    6, 7, 8, 9.

6 + 3 =9

Next week we will count back for subtraction.

Reading bags have been coming home.  Please make sure your child reads to you every night.  I will send home the first reading log on Monday.  Please sign the number of minutes your child reads each night and sign the log.  I will be checking the logs and students are rewarded for doing their reading.
