First Grade Concert

Our First Grade Concert will be tomorrow, May 2, 2018, at 1:30p.m., in the Little Theatre.  If your child is wearing a costume, please send it to school in a bag.  They will change after lunch.

The children have been working so hard!!!!  I can’t wait to see it all come together.  I hope to see all of you tomorrow.

Welcome Back

It has been a great first week back.  I was happy to see that most of the children read over the break and came back ready for new books.  We have been spending a lot of time on informational reading and text features.  I hope the students are pointing out bold print, picture captions and diagrams.  The Scholastic News magazines I send home use many of these features.  Please don’t just throw them out.  Ask your child what they learned.  Ask them to point out the important text features.  Most will be very excited to show you.

In science we are learning about animal traits and why they are important.  Just before break we experimented with different types of bird beaks and why the different types were important because of the food they eat or their environment.

In social studies we are working on life in the past and how it is different from life now.  We will explore transportation, communication and other ways of life.  The unit will conclude with a trip to Greenfield Village in June.  Details will come home closer to the date.

Remember to read to and with your child!!!!!

Reminders

Tomorrow, Thursday, March 15, 2018 is picture day and book fair.  Please, Please, Please put any money brought in tomorrow in an envelope labeled with your child’s name, the amount of money and what it is for.  For example, If Ali brings money in for the book fair, he would bring an envelope with Ali, book fair, $5.  Then I will know what the money is for and there will be no mix ups.

Reading Homework

  • I am just sending out a reminder about reading homework. It is homework to read for at least 20 minutes every night. Part of the homework includes a parent signing the reading log every night. Michigan law states that all students must read third grade level by third grade or they will be held in third grade. Please make sure your child is reading!!!!!  Reading logs were collected on Friday. Several students did not bring them in. If you have it please send it in on Monday. Thank you for helping your child succeed!  Continue reading

Happy New Year

  • I just wanted to wish everyone a happy new year!   You should have most of your homework packet done. If there is something that was tricky, have someone make similar problems for you to practice.  Don’t forget to read. Today would be a great day to visit the library!  Reading logs are due when we get back. Enjoy the last few days of vacation. I will see everyone on Monday.  Continue reading

  • I hope everyone is enjoying your time off. Today would be a great day to work on a few pages from your homework packet. Look ahead to the last page. See how many words you can read or write.

I am posting to ask for each student to bring in headphones for the use of the chrome books.  It is much easier for the students to focus if they can only hear their computer.  Five below or Target may carry them.  Don’t spend a lot.  Cheap ones are fine, but NO EAR BUDS please.  Headphones can be sent in any time.  My hope is to have a full set by the time we get back from break.  Thank you for your support.
