March and April

March is Reading Month is coming to an end. So far we have read 292 books. Wow!!!!! Our goal is 300 books, so maybe by the end of the day we will reach our classroom goal. We are so close. I am very proud of their hard work.

Next week April 1-5, we do not have school because of spring break. I have sent home a homework packet and tried to put a few extra books in the reading bags to work on over break. Please have your child read at least 15-20 minutes daily so that he or she will be the same level when we return from break.

Vocabulary
We will continue to work on prefixes when we return. I will add words with with the prefixes un- and mis- to our list. See how many words you can find over break with these prefixes and bring them to class.

Science
Our science unit on Earth and Sun is wrapping up as well. The students have done a great job explaining why the moon looks like it is changing shape because of the shadow the Earth makes on the moon by blocking the sun. Ask them to explain some facts about our powerful sun too.

Vocabulary

Our vocabulary will focus on prefixes and suffixes for the next few weeks.
This week we will be working on the prefix non- which means no or not.

nonliving

Remember to use the words as much as possible at home so your child can proudly use the words at school and in their writing.

March is Reading Month

March is reading month is starting on Friday. We will have a special Hat day this Friday, March 1, 2019. Wear a hat and bring in $1.00. All the money will go towards field trips and special things for the school. Our PTA raises money to generously help us with these things. I will be sending home a calendar of things to do each day during the month of March to encourage reading.

Each week the school will be having a reading raffle. Every book your child reads and writes a summary for he or she can get a raffle ticket. Your child can do as many summaries as he or she wants but can only do a book one time. The summary has to be written by your child. Every Friday there will be a raffle for a prize. The more you read the more tickets you can get.

Science

On Friday, March 1, 2019 a moon watch observation log will be sent home. Each night go out and look at the moon and draw what you see. I know some nights your child will go to bed early or it will be to foggy to see the moon, but do the best you can. We will look at images on line daily to look for patterns in the moon phases and predict what phase or changes will come next.

Goals

We are working on new goals for the winter. I have discussed individual goals with about half of the class already. Look for the goal updates and graphs on the learning plans in your child’s folder. Ask your child to explain his or her goals and graph to you and refer back to these often to touch base on your child’s progress.

Mid Winter Break

I just want to send a reminder that there is a half day tomorrow, February 14,2019. We will dismiss at 11:10a.m.
Also there is no school on Friday, February 15, 2019 and Monday, February 18, 2019. We will return to school on Tuesday.

Over break, please remember to have your child reading every night. Ask your child questions about the story. What is the main idea? What lesson is being taught? What is the most important part of the story and why?

Additionally, please work on the computer. You can go on NWEA RIT practice or clever on the district website. Also Mrs. Jaber, our computer teacher has numerous websites that the students use in class on her blog.

Enjoy your time with your children. Go to the library, build a snowman or do a few science experiments together!
