December News

Thank you to everyone who came on our trip to High Velocity. We had such a good time!!!! The students practiced the need for rules and good sportsmanship. What a great way to wrap up our social studies unit.

In math, we are working on building a ten to make adding two numbers easier. Also we continue to work on story problems. Remember to have your child draw a picture, and a number bond to explain their thinking.

In science, we are beginning to learn about what produces light and the different properties of light. After winter break, I will be asking students to bring in flashlights with working batteries to use for class experiments. We will keep the flashlights for about a month. Then they will be returned home.

In social studies, we are discussing basic needs for families. Also we have been comparing different family traditions. The concept of past, present, and future are also being addressed. The more you use the vocabulary; past, present and future at home the quicker it will become part of their vocabulary.

In reading we have had a strong focus on informational text and their text features. If you find books at the library, ask the students about the table of contents, bold print, picture captions and diagrams.

Remember to read to and with your child to help them grow a love for learning.

October

Thank you to everyone who participated in the PINK OUT today. The school raised $3,000 to fight cancer. Way to Go!!!!!!

Halloween is next Thursday, October 31, 2019. Students are allowed to bring their costumes in a bag and we will change into them after lunch. Please no weapons, blood or masks. The annual Lowrey parade will begin at 2:00p.m. Students may bring in a bag of candy to pass to their friends in the class. We have 23 students.

In science we have been exploring sound discovering how sound is made and how to manipulate different type of sounds. I was really impressed with the sound tubes the students created and the details they added to their plans. We are still making predictions for some of the mystery sounds. Next we will be designing and creating musical instruments in class. I will be looking for students’ understanding that parts of the instruments need to vibrate in order for sound to occur.

In math we have been working on addition number stories. Students have to draw a picture, a number bond and write a number equation. Students are also asked to write to explain their thinking. This week subtraction was introduced. Students will learn how subtraction and addition work together.

Remember to read to and with your child daily!!
