This week we are going to read The Very Busy Spider by Eric Carle and complete some fun activities. Remember any activities your child completes please send me a video or pictures so I can document that he or she is completing the work. The contingency plans start today and I will be calling each family to explain the plan and review your child’s classroom goals.

  • Look around your house for farm animal toys you may have.
  • Name the farm animals, count the farm animals or make a barn for them to live in.
  • Name the colors of the animals
  • Make the animal sounds – What does a pig say? OINK< OINK <OINK
  • Take your animals outside to play on this beautiful day!

Good Monday morning

Starting this week things will be changing a little on the blog. We have what is called a contingency plan that Dearborn schools is putting in place. Since each student has their own IEP (Individual Education Plan) we are not fully able to implement the IEP due to the fact that we are virtually teaching. It is still important to work on the students goals so that is what we (OT, SPEECH and SOCIAL WORK) will be focusing on. I will continue to post a daily activity.

Today Ms. Margaret the Occupational Therapist has asked me to post an activity for you do work on at home.

Week 1 OT

“Movement is key to learning. Movement and dance activities such as crawling, creeping, rolling, turning, walking, skipping, reaching and swinging are essential for a toddler and a young child’s brain development.” These activities help strengthen muscles, nerves, brain cells, speech centers and vision, so your child can use their hands, eyes and body more efficiently to eat, play, draw, write and read.

  1. Choose 5-10 minutes of these motor exercises:
    • Crawling under, over and around furniture or through a tunnel if you have one
    • Crashing into a mound of pillows and being playful with your child after they land. You can include language like “Ready, Set, Go” “One, Two, Three,” or singing traditional nursery rhymes “Humpty Dumpty Sat on a Wall…”
    • Laying on belly and going for blanket rides
    • Building a mini obstacle course with chairs, jumping on stickers, pretending to be an animal (hopping like frog, crawling like a bear, wiggling like a worm, moving slow like a turtle on hands and knees, etc)
  1. Massage your child’s head, arms and hands using deep pressure to wake up sensation and muscles of the upper body before practicing one of these fine motor activities.
  1. Choose 5-10 minutes of these fine motor exercises:
    • Putting coins into a piggy bank (make one with an old plastic container if you don’t have one)
    • Cutting play doh (supervised of course), rolling it out like a long snake, pinching it, rolling it into small balls. If you do not have play doh or putty, there are so many easy to make home made dough. I will share a recipe if you need one!
    • Practicing putting on or taking off shoes, wiping face, brushing teeth, opening food packages, practicing hand washing or any self care activity they are not able to do on their own.
    • Drawing shapes, letters or writing sight words or making marks with glue/glitter/sand/markers/crayons/chalk on sidewalk/
    • Use clothespins to pick up cotton balls

Today we are going on a lion hunt!

To go on the lion hunt we will need to make some binoculars.
You can make a set of binoculars with two toilet paper holders, a paper towel holder cut in half (that is what I did) or you can just roll two pieces of paper up and then tape together. Of course don’t forget to decorate your binoculars! Now we are ready to go. Watch the song and don’t forget to take your new binoculars with you.

After you go on a lion hunt you can take your binoculars and go on a color hunt, shape hunt or letter hunt. Just ask Mom or Dad to help you play the game. Maybe you want to go on a color hunt and find things that are blue or a fruit hunt like I did.Let me know what what you found on your hunt and don’t forget to send me a picture of your binoculars.

You can practice writing or tracing the words pineapple, orange, apple, banana and lemon.

Stay safe!

Spring Break

I thought I would share this post from Mrs. Waddell, Principal at Whitmore-Bolles in case you are wondering why am not posting next week.

April 6th through April 10th is spring break for the Dearborn Public Schools. During this week students will not need to complete any on-line assignments and teachers will not be available. Students and teachers are on break starting Monday April 6th and continuing through Friday April 10.

This is only for the week of April 6th through the 10th.
Students will continue their distance learning on Monday, April 13, and teachers will once again be available to deliver on-line and distance learning.
Once again, all on-line and distance learning will resume on April 13 and continue until the end of the school year.
Please remember that we must all do our part to stop the spread of the COVID 19 virus. Please stay home, stay safe.

I would just recommend going back to past blog posts to find activities in case you want to keep a schedule next week.

I would love to see pictures of what everyone is doing. I will be home just like everyone else so pictures are welcome!

Have a safe break! Mrs. Schuit
