Epic Book News!

Epic!
Many of you have been asking if epic will be free once school is out. I just received this today and thought I would share it with you.

Dear Epic Educator,

With summer approaching, you’ve been asking for ways to keep students reading after June 30. Great news! Starting July 1st, all families who have signed up for Remote Student Access through an invitation from their teacher will be able to enjoy a brand-new service, Epic Free, which includes 2 hours of free reading per week in a limited library of high-quality, educational books.

There is nothing more that you or your families need to do — RSA family accounts will automatically transition to Epic Free on July 1, allowing them to keep reading on Epic through the summer and beyond. Get the details here >

To kick off summer reading on Epic Free, our resident librarian has compiled our top picks by age group — from emerging readers to advanced readers. Feel free to share this with your families to encourage the love of reading all summer long! See the list >

Finally, many educators are asking how to continue using Epic during Back to School 2020. We know the new school year brings uncertainty, but rest assured, we’re working on solutions to help support remote learning and will continue to make Epic free for educators and their students for as long as it takes to get through these unusual times. Follow our social channels — FacebookTwitter, and Instagram and watch your email for an update coming in July.

Thank you again for your dedication to your students. Enjoy a well-deserved summer break!

Best,

The Epic Team

Free Student meals over the summer

Dearborn will continue offering free student meals over summer

Free student meal distributions will continue throughout the summer at seven Dearborn Public School sites.

The district has been distributing the free grab-and-go meals since shortly after the Governor ordered schools to close in March.  That program is slated to end on June 10, which is scheduled to be the last full day of school in the District.

However, Dearborn Schools received permission to continue serving free meals through the summer under the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Summer Food Service Program.

The summer meal distribution will be once a week on Wednesdays starting June 17. Food will be handed out every Wednesday from 10 a.m. to noon at the seven locations.  Each bag will contain seven breakfasts and seven lunches for each child under the age of 18.  Each child will also get a half gallon of milk.

The distribution locations will continue to be Fordson, Dearborn and Edsel Ford high schools, Woodworth and Smith middle schools, Salina Intermediate, and McCollough/Unis School.

One person can pick up food for any child living in the home.  The child does not need to attend that school.

The District has recently been providing 65,000 grab-and-go meals a week for children in the community.  Those meals, which include lunch and breakfast, are funded through the U.S.D.A. School Lunch Program. Dearborn used that program to offer free lunch and breakfast to all its kindergarten through 12th grade students before the school closure in March.

“We know our families appreciate the student meal distributions, and we are glad to be able to continue to offer children these meals during the summer months,” said Food Service Director Jeff Murphy.

Medication & Student belongings pickup today for all students, 9am-1pm! Also, please return library books. GSRP applications will be available.

Picking up student belongings

The day has finally arrived when parents of our preschoolers (ECSE, GSRP) – 5th graders can pick up their student’s favorite hoodie, winter coat, 2 pairs of shoes, assortment of little toys, broken pencils, secret diaries, fresh as a daisy lunch boxes or any other wonderful items left in their desk or locker!

(Hope we all have at least a little sense of humor left at this point!)



Teachers have bagged up student items and we are ready to go! We will have tables set up by grade level on the sidewalk outside the office, next to the parking lot. (We’ll be in the vestibule if weather is bad.)

There will also be a table with items from the lost & found and GSRP applications will be available for pickup.

Here are the ground rules:

  • A parent, guardian or family member over the age of 18 with a photo id must pick up the items.
  • If your student has medications that need to be picked up, a parent or guardian must be present to sign for them. Any meds not picked up Tuesday will be disposed of.
  • Anyone coming to pick up items must be wearing a mask.
  • Social distancing of 6 ft must be observed while waiting your turn.
  • No one will be allowed to enter the building

Returning school materials

This will also be the time for students to return items to the building. There will be bins at each grade level station where items should be placed. Students should return:

  • Media Center books
  • Classroom reading books
  • Reading bags
  • Any other items borrowed from teachers or the building (Except Chromebooks. We’ll be collecting those later.)

Yearbook Update

Lifetouch is partially on shut down, so our Yearbooks have not been shipped yet. We expect to receive them sometime in late summer and will be sure to get them to everyone who paid. Thanks for your patience!

Class composite photos will be available on June 2 for those who ordered fall pictures.

We miss you, so we hope all families will take advantage of the opportunity to bring a bag load of student goodies home for the summer. As we do with lost & found items at the end of each school year, any items not picked up on June 2 will be donated or discarded.

If you know you are unable to come on June 2, please contact Mrs. Waddell before Tuesday to work out other arrangements. Email at waddelk@dearbornschools.org or leave a voicemail at 313-827-6004. If we hear from you, we’ll hold on to items until the arranged alternative pickup time.

Take care Whitmore families! See you soon.
