Welcome back and I hope you had a wonderful and memorable Thanksgiving break with your family and friends. Semester 2 grade book closes on December 2, 2016.  The last 2 assignments posted for this semester are Biodiversity home and class projects.  Any missing assignments or projects not turned in yet, could be done so this week for partial credit.

This week  we will focus on symbiosis relationship between organism who live close by each other.  Glossary introduced this week are: symbiosis, mutualism, parasitism and commensalism.

Potential Misconceptions students might have are: 

1) Students may believe that symbiosis and mutualism are synonymous. (Symbiosis is any long-term relationship between two or more species. Mutualism is a type of symbiosis, as is commensalism and parasitism.)

2) Another misconception students may believe that predation is similar to parasitism in that one organism benefits and the other is harmed. Students will be reminded that symbiosis is a long-term relationship between organisms, thus excluding the short-term relationship in predation. Use of the terms parasite and host will help to differentiate between parasitism and predation, as will thorough examples. In parasitism the host remains alive.

  • An interactive lab is scheduled for this week where students will have an organism and find their symbiotic match and identify whether the match is a mutualistic relationship, parasitic relationship or a commensalistic relationship.
  • One homework assignment will be posted on Google Classroom where students will color code the different symbiotic relationships among organisms.
  • A class project will be introduced this week.
  • Additional resource students will have access to in order to learn about symbiosis is included in the green Environmental Science textbook.
