Last week in Science, students were introduced to UNIT 6.2 : Body Systems.

  • In lesson 1, students were introduced to the concept of outbreaks of a disease or illness affecting society. Students experienced how infections can spread from environmental sources or from direct contact with other infected organisms (Infected vs Safe Milk Lab). Some of the resources and discussions were…
    • Unit Bubble Map was created as a class and students discussed questions they had in order to answer the Unit Challenge question: How does a mystery pathogen make people sick and how can we come up with a treatment plan?

  • In lesson 2, students started an investigation last week to explore the qualities of good investigations.
  • We started this investigation last week as students observed a video about John Snow and his epidemiological strategy that uncovered the source of cholera. Afterward, they worked with their 6 o’clock science buddy to conduct a similar investigation that allows them to retrace John Snow’s steps and use data and a map to determine the source of cholera in the town.
  • This week, they will apply John Snow’s concepts and practices to determine the source of an infection in school known as the RAD disease.
    • Like John Snow’s epidemiological study, students will then be given interview results from various teachers as well as a map similar to our school map. Students will then analyze the data by creating a graph, which serves as their evidence when they make a claim about the source of the outbreak. Students will then produce a CER (Claim, Evidence, Reasoning) explaining their claim.

Lastly, in honor of African American History month, students will have the opportunity to research the life and accomplishments of a prominent African American in the science world. They will have the choice of working independently or with a small team of no larger than 3. After their scientist name is approved by me, they are to summarize their finding in a poster or slide show. Afterward, they will create a short FLIPGRID video summary of their findings as they post it in their class library.
