Objective:  I can match the moments with the last 5 stages in Oz and explain how Dorothy does not exactly fit the definition of a Hero in Stages 7 and 8.

Bell:  In Groups of 3 or 4, write the student information on the Gallery Walk handout.

Activities:

  1.  Gallery Walk:  Each group will write one comment for a “like” and “dislike” about each of the four student sample essays after taking an airplane view.(3 minutes each)
  2. Share Out:  What stands out as an important reason for the ranking of each essay?
  3. Match the moments in the movie for Stages 7-12.  Write notes about how Dorothy’s “Hero” status is not always clear.
  4. Bring your SSR book and Commitment Form

Objective:  I can improve the reasoning on my archetype or stage paragraph written last week(10/2).

Bell:  After reviewing Paragraph “A” and “B”(yesterday), I will write down one possible improvement that I can make from my archetype or stage paragraph from last week.

Activities:

  1.  Think Pair-Share:  I will discuss my idea for improvement with my neighbor and seek his or her advice.
  2. I will rewrite my paragraph with improved development.
  3. Share Out:  Analyze improvements as a class.
  4. Match moments in Oz with elements of JOH.
  5. Reminder:  Do not forget to study for the quiz tomorrow on Archetypes, Stages, Oz, and comma usage.

Objective:  I can contrast the difference in how details are used to develop a topic paragraph that describes the Ordinary World in Oz.

Bell:  In your notebook, make a T-Chart underneath the last entry(not the SSR log), and list a positive comment and a negative one for Paragraph A and Paragraph B.

Activities:

  1.  In groups of 3 or 4, find agreement on two positives and two negatives for each paragraph.
  2. Post-It:  Post your group choices on the board.
  3. Share Out:  Discuss one or two postings:  logical-sequential development.
  4. Match the moment in Oz with the Archetype or Stage.
  5. Quiz of Archetypes, Stages, Oz, and comma usage will occur on Wednesday(10/7), not Tuesday.

Bellwork:  Write a paragraph(5+ sent.) that shows how an archetype or stage that we have discussed in class is illustrated in the movie.

Activities:

  1.  Underneath your last entry in your notebook, write the definitions of Stages 11 and 12.
  2. Match the moments in Oz with the elements in the JOH.
  3. SSR:  Set up your notebook as directed and use your double-entry journal to write one note per page of reading.  The DHS library book commitment form is due today.
  4. Archetypes Quiz Make-up/Retake today after school.

Bell:  Write the definitions of the next two stages.

Activities:

  1.  Review the meanings of each stage and share possible examples.
  2. Match the moments in Oz with these elements of the JOH:  Mentor, Shadow, Threshold Guardians, and Tests, Allies, and Enemies.
  3. Post-It:  In groups of 3 or 4, determine the best statement that describes how your given archetype or stage is illustrated by a moment in Oz and post it on the board.
  4. Share Out:  Review the moments/elements suggested so far in Oz.
  5. Your DHS Library book and commitment form are due tomorrow.  The library is open tomorrow morning at 7am.
  6. Archetypes Quiz Make-up/Retake:  Friday(Oct. 2) after school.

  1.  Student as teacher explains the corrections.
  2. Underneath today’s bell work, write the definitions for Stages 9 and 10.
  3. As you view the movie, match moments with the archetypes and stages that we have defined until this point.  Ensure that you take notes when the movie is stopped.
  4. Remember, your DHS Library book with the commitment form is due on Friday(10/2).  The library is open A, B, and C lunch today and Thursday and Friday morning at 7 am.
  5. Archetypes Quiz Make-up/Retake:  Friday(Oct. 2) after school.

Objective:  I can find and check out a novel from the Dearborn High School library to complete the reading commitment form.

Bell:  Write the definitions for Stages 7 and 8 in your notebook underneath your last entry.

Activities:

  1. Make changes on your Book Preview and Commitment form.
  2.  Listen attentively to Mr. Pantaleo’s presentation on genres.
  3. Select a novel of 100 pages or more at the appropriate reading level. (Get the approval of Mr. Sapienza or Ms. Brumfield.)
  4. Check out the novel and write the return date on your form.
  5. The completed form is due on Friday at the first formal SSR.
  6. If time allows, continue matching the moments in Oz with the elements of the JOH.
  7. Archetypes Quiz Make-up/Retake:  Friday(Oct. 2) after school.

Objective:  I can match the elements(archetypes and stages) of the Journey of a Hero with moments in the Wizard of Oz.

Bell:  In your spiral notebook underneath your last entry, write the definitions for these stages:  Meeting With the Mentor, Crossing the First Threshold, and Tests, Allies, and Enemies.

  1.  As you view the movie, make specific connections between the JOH elements and specific moments.  i.e.  Dorothy falls into the pig sty and shows that she is in the Ordinary World stage because she seems like a fish out of water.
  2. In groups of 3 or 4, match one moment with one of the elements on a post-it.
  3. As a whole class, review the elements leading up to Stage 5 with a post-it discussion.

Activities:

  1.  Complete today’s quiz on “Archetypes”(5 min.)
  2. In your groups of 3 or 4, finish rehearsing the scene illustrating your chosen archetype.  Ensure that you can explain how one of its functions is present.
  3. Set up your SSR log in the back of your notebook.  See notes at board.
