Objective:  I can make inferences from the book of my SSR assignment.

BW:  Below last week’s entry for SSR, start a new date for your triple-entry journal making inferences.  Either start a new one with today’s date below last week’s entry or simply continue.  Ensure that your title/author are indicated for today.

Activities:

  1.  Read for inferences:  Quote/Page-What does the text say?-Inference
  2. Reminder:  Mr. Sapienza is available for late make-ups of the JOH test in the mornings at 6:30 am for Friday and Monday.  In addition, I will be available during “B” lunch on Friday and Monday.  Contact him for a time to make up the test.

Objective:  I can make inferences about the author’s craft with a close reading of “Cinderella.”

Activities

  1.  Use the 4-Step Process for the worksheet of “Cinderella.”
  2. Independent Reading:  Find the Archetype and Stage connections by reading “Cinderella” and answering the worksheet questions.
  3. Reminder:  The make-up and retakes for the JOH test are today after school in B-5.

Objective: I can make connections between the elements of the JOH and the texts studied  in this unit.

BW:  Review the third step for annotating: define unknowns, identify new Golden Lines, and ask/answer questions.

Activities:

  1.  Complete the test for the JOH unit.
  2. After completing it, continue the third step of annotating the Article of the Week about Russian hackers for a deeper reading.
  3. Share Out:  If time allows, we will explore other students’ results from the Poster Paper Activity.
  4. Reminder:  Complete your annotations for the Russian hacker Article of the Week for Friday’s class(Oct. 14) at the beginning of the hour.

Objective:  I can annotate the Article of the Week about Russian hackers.

BW:  Take notes on modeling of skim reading and boxing unknowns.

Activities:

  1.  Share  Out:  Identify two words that were boxed?  Did you get a gist or general idea?
  2.  Turn the title into a question:  Who? What? When? Where? Why? How?
  3. Students read lightly to answer the question posed by the title and underline for the Golden Line.
  4. Share Out:  What was your Golden Line?  Can I infer the gist or main idea of the article from it?
  5. Reminder:  Study for tomorrow’s test on the Journey of a Hero unit:  Elements of JOH, the Oz and “My Left Foot” connections, DLW, and Vocabulary.  Mr. Sapienza is after school today and tomorrow to help with late work on the iLearn quiz for Archetypes and Stages.

Objective:  I can match the quote with the Archetype or Stage for the of the journey in “My Left Foot.”

BW:  Match the number of the selected quote with the stage below it.

Activities:

  1.  Share Out:  Which quote suggests the Supreme Ordeal? etc.
  2. In your groups of 3 or 4, complete three Archetypes and/or Stages in the Poster Paper Activity.
  3. Share Out:  Each group defends a favorite.
  4. Reminder: Test on Wednesday(10/12) that includes JOH elements, Oz and “My Left Foot” connections, DLW, and vocabulary from the beginning of this card-marking.  Mr. Sapienza is available after school on Tuesday and Wednesday for make-up work on the Archetypes and Stages assignment.

Objective:  I can use inferences to match quotes in My Left Foot with elements of the JOH and explain the connection.

BW:  As a whole class, a triple-entry journal entry will be used to show how an inference can be found from a quote in “My Left Foot.”

Activities:

  1.  Find three more inferences for your triple-entry journal during today’s SSR.
  2. In groups of 3 or 4, find three more archetypes/stages for your poster-paper activity begun yesterday.
  3. Defend a Favorite:  If time allows, each group will provide an explanation of their favorite connection between an archetype or stage and a quote from “My Left Foot.”
  4. Reminder:  Your two favorites from the iLearn assignment are due today.  Ensure that you have completed your iLearn quiz on-line.

Objective:  I can make inferences of quotes from the text of “My Left Foot” to match with Archetypes and Stages of the JOH.

BW: Use the quote from p. 170  “I seemed indeed convulsed…” to make a connection with the trait of an Archeytype to “My Left Foot.”  Think Pair/Share:  What word(s) in the quote gives us a possible clue?

Activities:

  1.  In one sentence, write the connection as we practice with the Wizard of Oz lessons.
  2. Share Out:  Respond to the answers.
  3. Dramatic Reading:  p. 170
  4. Promethean Board:  Teacher models the use of a quote to match the Shadow Archetype from today’s reading and explain the connection.
  5. In groups of 3 or 4, students will use poseter paper to write a quote with a short explanation of how the traits of an Archetype or Stage are matched with it.  Begin with the Shadow Archetype.  Find these other Archetypes and Stages:  Hero, Mentor, Ordinary World, Crossing the First Threshold, Approaching the Inmost Cave, Supreme Ordeal, and Magic Elixir.
  6. Share Out:  Each group will defend a favorite choice before the class.
  7. Reminder:  The iLearn quiz is due tonight at 11:59 pm.  Your two favorite task responses are printed and turned in tomorrow at the beginning or your class hour.  Bring your SSR library book.

Objective:  I can infer connections between “My Left Foot” and the JOH in today’s reading of the story.

BW: Think Pair/Share–Compare and contrast the two student samples with your neighbor.  Determine one difference between both.  Write the difference in your notebook.

Activities:

  1.  Share Out:  Which sample uses a specific piece of evidence?  What is it?
  2. Listen-and-Learn:  p. 170 Question #5 “My Left Foot” p. 169
  3. Share Out:  How is the text saying it?  What is the author’s method?  Can we see elements of the JOH in this autobiographical narrative?  Who or What is the Shadow? Mentor?  Hero? Threshold Guardians?  Does Christy “Cross a First Threshold? etc.
  4. Reminder:  Your Archetypes and Stages iLearn quiz is due Thursday(Oct. 6) by 11:59 pm.  Submit printed copies of your two favorite task responses Friday at the beginning of class(Fri. Oct. 7).  Mr. Opferman and Mr. Sapienza are available again after school today for support.

Objective:  I can annotate the informational text about cerebral palsy by using the three-step process.

BW:  Identify two or three bits of textual evidence in the model paragraph matching the traits of a shadow with the image from The Lion King.

Activities:

  1.  Random Share Out: Describe one or two.  What is the connection with the trait(s) of the archetype?
  2. Review the expectations of the iLearn assignment.
  3. Teacher models the three-step process for annotating informational text by applying it to the first paragraph of the text about CP: box or circle unknowns(find the answers); use golden lines; ask questions.
  4. Students apply three-step approach to the next paragraph.
  5. Think Pair-Share:  Students analyze and discuss neighbor’s work.
  6. With neighbor, students work on the next paragraph or two together.
  7. Reminder:  Annotated cerebral palsy text is due tomorrow(Oct. 4).  Those who are absent must come before or after school for explanation of the technique to receive credit.  The iLearn assignment on Archetypes and Stages must be submitted on-line by 11:59 pm on Wednesday(Oct. 5).  Students are allowed to use images from the Wizard of Oz.  Provide two printed copies of your favorite task responses at the beginning of the class on Thursday(Oct. 6). Follow today’s bell work model that reviews how to write a matching a paragraph with textual evidence for the traits of the given element of the JOH.
