Once I have completed my exam, I can analyze my argumentative essay for three improvements by comparing it to the Student Exemplar and the class formal Exemplar.

Objective:  I can analyze reading questions in the PSAT2 by using annotation, paraphrasing, making inferences, context clues, etc.

BW:  As yesterday, write an answer/explanation for items #16, #17, and #18.

Activities:

  1.  Groupwork(3 or 4):  Use the proctocol to announce answers and then announce explanations in a round-robin manner.
  2. Determine a consensus choice for each answer/explanation.
  3. Share Out:  Be prepared to present your answer/explanation with a textual presentation at the  Promethean board.  Random selection.
  4. Independent Work:  Determine the answer explanation for items #29-#33.
  5. HW:  Complete items #34-#38 and items #39-#47 at home.  Review your work by looking at the answers afterwards and attempting find the explanation for the correct answer.

Objective:  I can analyze or find the reason why I selected answers for the PSAT2 by finding specific textual references.

BW:  Provide the answer/explanation for items #13, #14, and #15.  Use the model at the Promethean Board.

Activities:

  1.  In groups of four, find a consensus on the best answer/explanation and be prepared to explain it to the class for any of the items.
  2. Random Selection:  Explain your reason for answer for which you have been selected.  Use the visual at the Promethean board to show the “right there” information.
  3. If time allows, continue working independently.

Objective:  I can identify lines of evidence in Brutus and Antony’s funeral speeches that match certain argumentative and poetic tools.

BW: Copy these definitions from the board:  Ethos, Pathos, Logos, Repetition, Metaphor, and Alliteration.

Activities:

  1.  List the argumentative and poetic tools in the right column near the matching piece of evidence.
  2. Think Pair/Share:  Link the evidence with the tool by drawing an area to connect them.
  3. Independent:  Write four lines of evidence for each of the three argumentative and/or poetic tools that you have selected for your topic paragraphs in your organizer.
  4. Reminder:  Complete your organizer with 12 pieces of evidence for the beginning of class tomorrow.  If you have not completed your paraphrasing of both speeches, ensure that this work is finished tomorrow, too.  You will need all of this preparatory work to write your essay.

Activities:

  1. Annotate(talk-to-text) Section #1 beginning with “Friends, Romans, countrymen, lend me your ears…”(872).
  2. Promethean Board:  As a whole class, paraphrase Section #1.
  3. Independent:  Annotate and paraphrase Sections #2 and #3.
  4. Think Pair/Share:  Peer evaluate Sections #2 and #3.  Complete Section #4 together.
  5. Independent:  Complete annotating and paraphrasing the whole T-Chart for Antony’s funeral speech.
  6. Reminder:  For homework, complete annotating and paraphrasing of the entire T-Chart for Antony’s funeral speech.

Objective:  I can paraphrase Brutus’s funeral speech for Caesar’s death on pages 870 and 871.

BW:  Match each footnote definition with it word on the T-Chart and write down the definition for it.  The footnotes can be found on pages 870-871.

Activities:

  1.  Promethean Board:  As a whole class, Stanzas #1 and #2 will be paraphrased as  a model for independent work.
  2. Think Pair/Share:  Students will paraphrase Stanza #3.
  3. Independent:  Student will complete paraphrasing Stanzas #4, #5, and #6 along with the commoners’ dialogue.
  4. HW: Complete paraphrasing the whole text for Brutus’ speech and the commoners’ dialogue.
