On Thursday June 11, 2020, the Salina Staff will be outside wishing our third and eight grade students well.  It will be a chance to celebrate the new stages in their lives as third graders move into the Big Brown Building and eighth graders move on to EFHS.   The event will take place outdoors from 12:00-2:30 pm.  Students will arrive in cars and pass through the drive, greeted by their teachers and other staff members.  All staff will maintain social distancing guidelines and wear masks.

  • Students and families will remain in their cars. This will be a 1-way traffic coming from Lowrey Street.  SRO will be invited to attend to help with traffic control.
  •  There will be two clearly marked lanes (third and eight )  designated for the families in cars.  Staff members will be assigned to helping direct cars as they pull up.
  • As the cars go through, staff will be cheering them on with signs and music.  Designated teachers will hand students a gift packet from the schools using protective gear and maintaining a safe distance.
  • 3rd and 8th grade families will be informed of the event through social media sites, emails and robo-call and text.

6/1-6/5 STEAM Lessons (Elementary & Middle School) – LAST ASSIGNMENT

**ALL ASSIGNMENTS ARE DUE BY FRIDAY!!!**

These are the last assignments for Marking Period 4.

ELEMENTARY LESSON:  Farewell STEAM Survey (Student Feedback to Guide Instruction)

Objective:  I can reflect on my time in STEAM class and elaborate on what my favorite activities and lessons were.

Instructions:

Fill out the “Farewell STEAM” survey and let me know what your favorite lessons were from this year!  There is also a “comment” section at the end of the survey, so you can add more feedback there as well. Your feedback is highly valued and appreciated! It will be used to help guide my instruction for future STEAM classes!

MIDDLE SCHOOL LESSON:  A Solution for Better Sleep:  STEM Reading & Quiz

Teacher Support:  Pre-recorded video lessons on Google Classroom for reading support and translation support (please access the video if you could benefit from listening to me read the passage, questions, and answer choices aloud; video also includes Arabic translation). Reminder: students may use Google Translate for language support.

Objective:  I can use context clues, interpret figurative language, draw inferences, recall supporting facts, identify the main idea, and analyze perspective as evident through responses to questions relevant to a STEM reading passage.

Instructions:

Click on the quiz link to read the reading passage and answer the five multiple choice questions that are relevant to the reading.  This week’s reading connection focuses on blue light, its connection to technology, and how it affects your sleep! Remember that a good reading strategy is to read all the questions first so that you know what information to look for while you’re reading!  You may only take the quiz once, so take your time and review your answers before submitting.

Important Announcements

Dear STEAM Families,

I hope you are all safe and well!

I wanted to take this time to make some quick announcements:

1) Students have until next Friday to complete ALL of their remaining lessons on EverFi Endeavor (they should have at least half of them done by tomorrow if they are pacing themselves correctly).

2) All 8th grade students need to check their email today. An important announcement went out from the 8th grade team about graduation preparation and we need information from you!! This information needs to be submitted by WEDNESDAY, MAY 27!

3) Our next virtual STEAM meeting will be next Thursday 5/28 on iLearn (4:00 p.m.).

I wish all of you a blessed Eid Mubarak and a safe & enjoyable holiday break with your families!

Sincerely,
Mrs. Saleh

5/18-5/29 STEAM Lessons (Elementary & Middle School) – TWO WEEKS

*Assignments posted this week will cover a TWO week period because of the upcoming holiday break*–Eid Mubarak, everyone!!

*ALL ASSIGNMENTS ARE DUE BY: 5/29/20* (please plan accordingly)

5/18-5/29:

ELEMENTARY Lesson:  Writing Instructional Manuals

Teacher Support:  Pre-recorded videos of lesson instruction and reading support (read-aloud for quiz questions and answers). Additional videos on procedural writing will be posted on Google Classroom throughout these two weeks to help students become more familiar with “how-to”/procedural writing.

Objective:  I can interpret images to help me identify proper steps to write in an instructional manual explaining how to assemble a spoon catapult.

Instructions:

In last week’s assignment, the objective was to focus on listing detailed steps and instructions for a process in sequential order and to understand the importance of being very detailed and not missing any steps.  Your task for this week is to get some practice when it comes to one important thing that engineers are involved in: writing instructional manuals!

Please look at the image below and identify the CORRECTLY WRITTEN step that would go with each picture to explain to someone how to assemble a spoon catapult (the last picture shows you what the final result should look like).

Note:  Pay VERY close attention to the pictures and ZOOM IN if you need to (there are important details you might miss).  There are four pictures which means there will be four steps.

MIDDLE SCHOOL Lesson:  EverFi:  Endeavor (FINISH ALL REMAINING MODULES)

Teacher Support:  Pre-Recorded video lesson on Google Classroom.

Objective:  I can explore various STEM careers and identify how they target different interests, skills, and aptitudes.

Instructions:

Please log-in on EverFi using the following link:

https://platform.everfi.net/

Click on the “Endeavor” course and finish all remaining modules that you have not yet completed.  The modules must be completed by FRIDAY, May 29, 2020.  It should take you approximately an hour each week to go through the lessons and to complete the assessments. You do not need to do it all in one day.  You need to earn at least a 70% on the assessment for each module in order for it to count.  You may re-take the assessments as many times as you need to.
