Clay Sombrero

The fourth graders are learning about the history of the Mexican sombrero.

They are creating their own using clay.  Students had to practice how to make a pinch pot and a slab with oil clay before they start using earth clay. They have to learn how to score and add slip in order to attach the upside down pinch pot to the slab.  At the end, the students design their sombrero using different tools.

The students are asking me everyday if I fired the sombreros or not.

The answer is:  We have to wait until they are all dry before we put all of them in the kiln.

Field Trip (Sculpture Initiatives)

Before the visit to the Performing Arts Center in Dearborn to make a sculpture using recycled materials, the photographer Teresa Lousias showed two fifth grade classrooms a power point presentation about the the 3 dimensional artworks displayed all over the city of Dearborn and taught them about the elements of photography. We thank her for the wonderful presentation. We also thank the DCAC for funding this fun field trip.

Before working on their sculptures, Students visited the gallery at the Performing Arts Center in Dearborn to check out the photography exhibit.

The artist Eugene Clark guided the two fifth grade students to create a sculpture out of recycled materials. Then, they wrote poems about them.
The sculptures of four students were selected by their classmates to be displayed during the Art show reception opening on April 22.
