Still Life with Overlapping Pumpkins

The first graders are working on adding overlapping pumpkins on top of  the patterned table cloth that was designed the week before.  We took advantage of the pumpkins provided to me by the first grade teachers after their visit to Erwin’s Apple Orchard. The students were able to bring their pumpkins to the art room  and draw out of observation. Thank you to all those teachers for their cooperation.

For this project, I created my own still life in the classroom with overlapping pumpkins so the students can understand the concept of overlapping and how objects can be arranged in a still life..

Clay Sombraro

The last group  of students finished making and designing their own clay sombraro. Now, we are going to wait for them to dry so they can be fired and ready to be painted.

Owl Design Inspired by the Artist Thaneeya McArdle

After looking closely at the art of Thaneeya McArdle, the students learned how to draw an owl using shapes.  They practiced on a sketch paper first.  Then, they had to draw it on the final paper after making some adjustments.

Still-Life

This week, the first graders brought the pumpkin that they got from Erwim’s Apple Orchard to the art room.  They learned how to draw pumpkin from observation.  In order to see what part of the pumpkin they can’t see when it is overlapped by another pumpkin they had to borrow one from a friend to figure it out.

They learned to use curved and straight line to draw 3 pumpkins (small-medium-big)
