Week of October 26

This week, we reviewed the vocabulary of shapes. Then, the students used clay to make all the shapes learned. When finished, they have to count how many sides each shape has. Also, they had to point to the ones that have curved lines instead of straight ones. The students are becoming better with rolling clay and creating their coils to make shapes.

Week of October 26

The first graders are going to add more pumpkins to their still life.  Then, they will trace the curved and straight lines of the overlapping pumpkins using  light and dark orange crayons(dark for the outline-light for the details inside the pumpkin).  Also, they are going to trace the stems using a dark green crayon for the outline and light one for the details.

Week of October 19

We reviewed the vocabulary of lines.  Also, we reviewed the vocabulary of shapes learned the previous week.  We learned five new shapes such as triangle, diamond, heart, star, and crescent. The students were counting the sides for each shape.  They noticed that some of the shapes has straight sides and others has curved ones. At the end, they were able to create those shapes using oil clay by rolling snake shape coil for each one.  Students had to recognize the shapes they created for this week.

Art Club News

This year, Miller school has two groups enrolled in the art club. This week, I started with group one. Next week, group two will start on October 28, 2015.

This week, students in group one worked on decorating sugar skulls cookies as as an extension project for the Day of the Dead unit that they are studying. The kids enjoyed adding royal Icing to the sugar skulls.  Many students asked for the recipe so they can do this activity at home with their parents.
