Empty Bowls (5th Grade)

Thank you to all my fifth graders for making clay bowls to help feed many needy families in our community.  Miller students raised 150 dollars so far.  If you son or daughter likes to buy one clay bowl, please tell them to come to the art room and pick their own or the bowl of another student. It is only for a donation of 5 dollars. The money will go to Gleaners and Blessing in a Backpack.

Last Monday, The art teachers were able to sell the Empty Clay Bowls and raise 3,500 dollars.  This amount will increase because the art teachers are still allowing the students a chance to buy the  bowl they made.

Here are some photos taken before the Empty Bowls events and some at Park Place. The finished bowls looked very colorful just like the fall leaves. The students did an amazing job and I am very proud of them for trying to make them look so neat and for participating in a very worthy cause.

Empty Bowls ( 5th Grade)

Before applying colors to the bone dry clay bowls, fifth graders learned about the difference between  glazing and painting with washable paint.

Then, they started to paint their clay bowls that we fired in the kiln.

.  They used Fall colors to make the leaf shape looks realistic. Students had lots of fun discovering  new colors when they blended all of the colors they used.  They look like a real leaf that you see on trees at this time of the year.

At the end, students wrote about this experience in their journals.

Wayne County Regional Enhancement Education Millage Proposal

School districts in Wayne County have placed a proposal on the November 8th ballot to provide added funding for our schools. It is the “Regional Enhancement Millage Proposal.”

If approved by the entire county, the 2 mil proposal will generate approximately $6.2 million from Dearborn but the District will receive $7.8 million in additional funding for our schools.  Money would go to local schools starting this year and the millage expires after six years.  Continue reading

Abstract Art With the Letters of the Name (2nd Grade)

Students are painting their Abstract Artworks

In Art, 2nd graders learned about Abstract art and compare and contrast it with Realistic art by looking at two artworks.

After introducing the different kinds of lines, students used the letters of their names to create an abstract artwork by rotating the letters to fill up the page.  The name was repeated over and over. The lines were traced with black crayons.  They painted the closed area created by the intersecting lines.
At the end, they painted the background using water color.

The best ones were the ones that you can not tell the name of the student who create it.  They look amazing! Students did a very good job!  Well done second graders!

Self-Portrait (5th Grade)

Fifth graders learned how to draw a grid by folding their paper three times and tracing the lines . The horizontal and vertical lines of the grid were used as guidelines to help the students draw the details of the self-portrait.  One side of the grid was used to draw half-of the self-portrait.  The other half was used to write the name of the student.  Students used different kinds of lines to design their work.  Then, these lines were traced with crayons.  At the end, students learned how to mix colors to find the right skin tone for the face.

Students were introduced to patterns and were asked to use patterns of lines and colors to design the other half of the artwork.

Students are painting the faces.

Day of the Dead Sugar Skulls (3rd Grade)

In Art, third grade students worked on designing  sugar skulls for the Day of the Dead using different kinds of lines. They learned about this Mexican holiday, why, and how it is celebrated in Mexico and around the world.

The  celebration of Day of the Dead will take place on October 31st, November 1st, and November 2nd. Now, the sugar skulls are displayed in the Art  hallway at school.  Make sure you take the time to find the one that your son or daughter designed.  They did a great job and had fun designing and painting.

Empty Bowls (5th Grade)

Today, my fifth graders started to work on a community project called “ Empty Bowls“.  Students are learning how to make a clay bowl to donate and to be sold at the Empty Bowls Dinner on Monday, November 21, 2016.  The money will be used to help feeding the hungry. The event will take place at Park Place Banquet Hall, located at 23400 Park Street in Dearborn (2 blocks south of Michigan Avenue at Outer Drive).

The Art Department has been organizing this event in Dearborn for the last 25 years.  The proceeds will go to Gleaners and Blessings in a Backpack. These two organizations are known for helping feeding many families in our area.

Students are learning how to transform a 2D slab of clay to a 3D clay bowl by using a mold.

I will be adding photos of the students working on this great project.

What is happening in the art room?

My name is Mrs. Saad.  I am the only art teacher at Miller school for all grades. I would like to welcome my former and my new students. I am looking forward to a great year with lots of successful art students.  I work throughout the year to collect beautiful artworks for the art show in April. Every year, I pick ten artworks of Miller students to be showcased at the Performing Arts Center in Dearborn during the month of April and May.

This year, I will be teaching the students about the elements of art.  These include Color, Shape, Line, Texture, Space, Form and Value.  These are the building blocks of all art projects just as the alphabet is used as the building blocks of language.  In addition, my focus will be on helping the students improve the academic vocabulary related to Math and specifically geometry that are taught in their classrooms.

I will be posting the objective of each lesson and how the students are progressing in demonstrating the application by showing photos of the kids working on accomplishing the goal desired.

You can click on the grade level at the top of my blog to see what each grade is doing.
