Today in class students finished reading sections 4-7 and completed their reading notes for sections 4-7.  These reading notes are for the students benefit when we take our assessment because they may USE these notes on the assessment!  Make sure they have them completed.

Chapter 3 reading notes:

On the last page of the notes, at the bottom, you will see something called ‘processing.’  This will be a writing assignment students will need to do that will be due on Monday.  However, the processing calls for one paragraph, I want the students to write 3 paragraphs.  They need to compare and contrast humans in the Paleolithic and Neolithic times from 3 ways: 1) obtaining food supply, 2) how they lived, and 3) skills they developed (jobs/trade).
This is not a 5 paragraph essay, they don’t need an introduction or conclusion.  It’s just a simple writing assignment.  Here is what I want for each paragraph:

We watched another video at the end of class.  I didn’t finish it with any class, so they can finish watching it at home.  Here is the video:

Also, make sure to bring colored pencils and/or markers to class tomorrow!

Thank you

Today in class we continued with chapter 3 and together as a class we read, discussed and did our reading notes for section 3.  Then students worked on our word wall with our key terms.
After that, students needed to read and complete the reading notes for sections 4 and 5.  Whatever they didn’t finish for these reading notes is homework.

HOMEWORK:  Read sections 4 and 5 in their textbook and complete the corresponding reading notes.

As an enrichment learning activity, here is a website that students can look through and discover interesting things about the ancient Neolithic city of Catal Hoyuk.  This site is done by the Science Museum of Minnesota and it shows what artifacts are found, the processes that archaeologists need to do when finding new information and really just some great information.  I may come up with some extra credit questions that concern this website.  (This is not homework, though its a way for students to enhance their learning).  ENJOY!

Yesterday students took the chapter 1 assessment.
They were to also complete the vocabulary from chapter 3 in their notes (with two words in chapter 2).  Here is the vocabulary they need to know (should be in their notebook as shown on paper, along with the definitions of course):

scaffolded notes for vocab

Today in class we started chapter 3.  This chapter discusses the revolutionary idea of farming that allowed humans to go from hunting and gathering to stabilized communities.

In our reading notes, we started with the preview activity, where students created a cartoon strip showing the difference of life before the invention of the computer and after the invention.  The purpose of this is to compare the computer to agriculture.  It changed the way us humans live our lives on multiple aspects.
Here are the reading notes (we only did the preview activity on the first page!!):

CHAPTER 1 ASSESSMENT IS TOMORROW!

Students may use their reading notes that we used in class.  They may NOT use their study guide or their vocabulary notes.  So they need to STUDY their study guide and vocabulary (vocabulary will just be matching on the assessment).

Students need to work on the LAST page of the reading notes and answer the questions based off the picture provided (see attachments).  This will be due tomorrow!
(You will need Adobe Reader downloaded on your computer for these to open.  Just google search “adobe reader” and it is free to download.  Otherwise, these attachments won’t open up)

Today in class we went over sections 4-9 in their reading notes.  We basically focused on what scientists believe the reasons for certain paintings were created for.  We also answered the chapter 1 essential question.

THURSDAY IS OUR CHAPTER 1 ASSESSMENT!!

A study guide was handed out today.  Students MAY use their reading notes on the assessment.  They may NOT use their study guide or their vocabulary notes for the assessment.  Students do not need to turn in their study guide.  HOWEVER, we will go over it tomorrow, so they need to work on it for homework.  They can write the answers on the back or on a separate sheet of paper.
Here is the study guide (twice on one page):

Extra Credit option!
Students can work on an extra credit assignment that will be worth 25 points formative.  In the reading notes (see attachment) at the VERY LAST PAGE, students need to fill out that sheet called “processing” that is relating to a picture (see other attachment).  They need to use their skills learned from chapter 1 to fill out that sheet (for ‘Name of Scientist’ and ‘Date of Discover’ just have students put their name and today’s date).
