Today we continued in Chapter 4, and talked about how the ancient Sumerians protected themselves from attacking forces who were trying to take water and resources.
Students read section 6 and completed the reading notes for that section.

No homework unless they didn’t finish section 6 reading notes

PARENT-TEACHER CONFERENCES

Today in class I showed your child their grade for the 1st card marking.  So if you want to know that grade, simply ask them, because they saw it today.

Of course, EVERYONE IS WELCOME TO CONFERENCES.  Although, I want to say, if your child received a good grade, or you don’t have any major concerns, then please don’t feel obliged that you HAVE to come.  Again, if you want to come, you are more than welcome.  But I know, as well as you know, that they lines at conferences are long and waiting can be very difficult.  So please, if your child is already getting a good grade in my class, please don’t feel that you must be there.

But again, all are welcome.  It is TOTALLY UP TO YOU, THE PARENT!!

I will be doing more traditional style conferences.  If you want to have your child be there, that is fine, but I am not requiring it.

I will also have their 5 themes of geography projects to return to you (they will be in a box outside, you can search the box to find your child’s).

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me!

Yesterday and today in class we began with chapter 4, The Rise of Sumerian City-States.

Students took their assessments for chapter 3 on Wednesday.  I got a good report from the sub for all classes, so everyone received the 5 points extra credit.

Here are chapter 4 reading notes.  We have only worked on the ‘Preview’ part and Section 2:

Today we went over the chapter 3 study guide.

TOMORROW IS THE CHAPTER 3 ASSESSMENT!

Students may use their reading notes on the assessment.  They may NOT use their study guide, vocab notes or illustrated dictionary on the assessment.  The study guide is for studying purposes only.

Tomorrow I will not be here (I forgot to mention this to my 1st hour).  So students have been informed what is expected of them.  The sub will have clear instructions of what they can and cannot use on the assessment.
If any students are caught cheating, their test will be taken away and will be given a detention, no excuses.
If any students are misbehaving during class, their name will be put on a list, and that student will receive a detention.

Here is my deal:  if no one (for each hour) misbehaves or doesn’t cheat, then all students in that class will receive 5 points extra credit (formative).  If anyone’s name is written down, then NO ONE will get the extra credit (again, per class).

When students come to class, they will do 5 minutes of freewriting for bellwork.  They can write about whatever they like.  Then they will take the assessment.  When they are finished, they will work on vocabulary for the next chapter (sub will say which chapter).

Good luck on the assessment, I will see you on Thursday.

Today in class students created a comic strip that deals with the changes from paleolithic age to neolithic age.  They were assigned to one section in the book (food supply, shelters, communities, jobs, or trade) and they were to create their comic strip based off of that information.  Attached is the template and cut-outs that were given in class.

EXTRA CREDIT OPTION
If students want to do extra credit, they can create up to two more comic strips with 2 other sections in chapter 3.  I will give 10 points for each section they do, but they may ONLY do 2 more sections (they can choose their sections).
If they do the extra credit, they don’t need to re-do the cover page.

Here is all the information for the comic strip:
