Today in class students received the chapter 5 study guide.  Assessment will be on Wednesday!!  We will review the study guide tomorrow so I want students to have it done.

I also showed a couple videos that I found that show what a Sumerian city-state may have looked like.  It gave students a better visual of it.  However, of course, these videos are not perfect nor fully correct!!  We discussed in class what things were missing in the videos that should be in a sumerian city-state.  One was actually created by a student from the game minecraft!

Nov. 14th, 2014

Today in class we worked on the ‘processing’ assignment from the reading notes.  Please look at the LAST PAGE (page 8) of the reading notes on how to complete the assignment.  Basically they need to cut out pictures from magazines or newspapers that show modern evidence of characteristics of civilization.  Rules were discussed in class.  This will be due on Monday!!

Nov. 13th, 2014

Today we finished the skills builder activity where students connected artifacts from ancient Sumer to different characteristics of civilization.
Then we made a t-chart listing the different artifacts and what characteristics was related to them.  They turned this in for credit.

If students didn’t have time to finish their reading notes, they will be responsible for them on their own.  Here are the reading notes and pictures of artifacts:

Tomorrow, we will work on creating a web diagram about modern times of our civilization.  They will use magazine pictures for evidence.

I plan on having the Chapter 5 assessment next week Tuesday or Wednesday

Extra Credit

Please bring in magazines for tomorrow!!  Students will receive extra credit points for doing so.  Also, if they can remember, please have them bring them to me first thing in the morning.  I want to use them for all my classes!
Any magazine is fine (school appropriate).  E.g. Time, National Geographic, Sports Illustrated, People, Better Homes, or any kind of fashion, cars, outdoors, etc…

Also, boxes of tissues will receive extra credit too.  2 max per student per card marking

Today in class, we did an activity where students had to analyze artifacts and connect them to different characteristics of civilization in ancient Sumer.  I know that sounds a little confusing, but overall the students did a good job today.  We didn’t finish the activity today, so we will continue with it tomorrow.  But students had to read and complete reading notes for sections 4-9 and identify which artifacts show evidence from that section.  Here are the reading notes and artifacts:

I plan to have the chapter 5 assessment next week Tuesday or Wednesday.

Grades for the chapter 4 assessment are on parent connect.

Extra Credit options:

I need  magazines for class on Friday.  If students bring in magazines, I will give them extra credit.  No more than 5 magazines per student.   They can be older magazines, because we will be cutting them up and using pictures.  So make sure  you don’t want them!
Magazines can be anything:  People, National Geographic, Sports illustrated, Time, Fashion magazines, car magazines, video games, Better Homes, etc…  BASICALLY ANYTHING SCHOOL APPROPRIATE!

Also, if students bring in boxes of tissue, I will give extra credit points.  2 boxes max per student, per card marking (3 points ec for each box).

Today we went over section 2 in the book and completed the reading notes.

Then we discussed the activity that the student will do tomorrow and Thursday.  We modeled the activity with section 3 in the book.

Tomorrow we will conduct the reading activity.

Today in class I introduced the new chapter on Ancient Sumer.  In the chapter we will learn about what makes a society ‘civilized.’  We did a preview activity where they had to discuss a quotation saying “Modern humans are not civilized anymore.”  They had to agree or disagree with that statement and state what characteristics make a society civilized, and then shared with classmates.  We then read section 1 in chapter 5.

Homework:

Paragraph on personal artifacts is due tomorrow (from Friday).  Last page of ch 4 reading notes is the assignment.

Nov. 7th, 2014

Today in class we discussed the ‘Reading further’ section in our books from pages 40-43.  It’s about the excavation of the ancient city of Ur in Sumer.  Students had to analyze artifacts and base conclusions about societies from the evidence of the artifacts given.

Homework will be the LAST PAGE on the reading notes.  They need to list 5 things in their bedroom as a personal artifact.  Then, they need to write a paragraph stating a conclusion that an archaeologist in the future would say about them, based only on those artifacts listed.  The directions are listed on the sheet.  Again, its the last page of the reading notes, page 8 (we did page 7 in class today).  It only needs to be one paragraph.  I changed the rubric score to 15, 10, and 5.

Today students took their chapter 4 assessment.

I also checked bellwork, it was worth 40 points since I didn’t check it during the last test.

Homework on the Sumerian city-state advertisement was due today as well.  If they didn’t do it, then they need to get it in by tomorrow.

Students need to work on their vocabulary for chapter 5 in their notes, blue and bolded terms.

Tomorrow we will do a reading on the excavation site of the Sumerian city of Ur.   There will be a writing assignment to go along with it.

Monday we will begin chapter 5.

Today in class we reviewed for tomorrows assessment.  We went over the study guide and did a review game.  Here is the study guide:

I will also check bellwork tomorrow.  Worth double points since I didn’t check it last time.

Today in class we reviewed all of chapter 4:  how did the Sumerian City-States come to be?

We then went into section seven and completed the notes.

THURSDAY IS OUR CHAPTER 4 ASSESSMENT!!

Study guide was given today.  Students need to complete it by Wednesday so we can go over it in class.

Another homework assignment is the ‘Processing’ at the end of section 7 in their reading notes.
Students are to create a ‘real estate advertisement’ about a Sumerian city-state.  They need to have a catchy title, illustrations and captions for their illustrations.  It MUST be colored (I told 1st hour it did not, but I decided it should be).  Also, I DO NOT want students to print anything from the internet.  Everything should be created by themselves.
For this assignment find it at the bottom of section 7 in their reading notes, page 6.
