Today in class we read over the Code of Hammurabi-Overview sheet.  This will help students with background information about the Code of Hammurabi so they can write their summary for their project.

Attached is the overview sheet along with some of the actual laws from the code (pgs. 3-4)

Today I gave students their sheet for the Code of Hammurabi project, which also has the rubric on it as well.  Students are to create a poster for the project that has 4 things on it: 1) a summary of the code, 2) a summary of their thoughts on the laws, 3) create a list of their own laws if they were leader of a school, and 4) a picture

On the attachment explains everything they need on the poster.  Also, it has the overview sheet about the Code of Hammurabi with some actual laws from the code.  We will read the overview tomorrow in class.

The extra credit on the Sumerian city-state is due on Friday.  Some students have already turned in their 3-d models of a city-state and also sent a video of their work from the game Minecraft online.  Here is an example of what some students have done already for the project

Today in class we reviewed what we discussed last week Thursday, on the 4 empires of Mesopotamia.

I then assigned groups to one of the 4 empires in chapter 6.  They were to read the two sections about their empire, and then complete the corresponding reading notes given in class.

After they did their reading and completed the notes, I assigned an in-class poster project.  I had a list of criteria for what needed to be on the poster, and explained they had the rest of today’s class and most of tomorrow’s class to finish it.  It must be done, in class, by the end of class tomorrow.

Poster criteria:

Empires of Mesopotamia poster project

Chapter 6 reading notes (I only gave sections 2-9, pages 2-5)

ch 6 reading notes

Tomorrow we will finish the posters.

Extra Credit:
Don’t forget, the extra credit on building the Sumerian city-state either with materials or on a computer program will be due Friday Dec. 5th!!

Nov. 21st, 2014

Students turned in their illustrated dictionaries today for chapter 6.  Any late can be turned in on Monday.

Today I showed students what is, and how to use, quizlet.  Quizlet is a great resource online to help with vocabulary.  If you notice, to the right in my blog, you will see a section called “Class Links.”  Underneath it is Quizlet.  That will take you to the quizlet website, quizlet.com.
If the students goes to quizlet.com by typing in the url or using my blog, they will need to search my name and chapter (e.g. piche chapter 6).  There they can find my site.

OR

They can go to this direct link on the post to go straight to chapter 6 vocab for my class:

https://quizlet.com/59444117/chapter-6-piche-vocab-flash-cards/

They can even download the free app on their phones or tablets and use it that way!

The website is a great resource tool for students to use to help their their vocabulary development.  I will encourage ALL students to use this site for practice.  Especially when they get to 8th grade, they will be using this a lot for class and MEAP prep.

They don’t need to create a log-in ID, however they can if they like…its free!!

If you have any questions about quizlet, please send me an e-mail.

No homework for the weekend, enjoy!

Today I introduced chapter 6.  We will talk about different empires from the Mesopotamian region.

Tomorrow the illustrated dictionary is due.  They need to do it on a loose leaf sheet of paper, using the 6 blue words from chapter 6.

Thank you

Nov. 19th, 2014

Today students took the chapter 5 assessment.

We will move on to chapter 6 “Exploring 4 Empires of Mesopotamia.”  This is a really interesting chapter that discusses the four large empires who took over Mesopotamia at different times for thousands of years.  Empires like the Akkadians, Babylonians, and Assyrians.  They even discuss the Code of Hammurabi, one of the first ever known written sets of laws.

Students are to do the vocab in their notes and also make their own illustrated dictionary.  The illustrated dictionary only needs the blue terms in the chapter.  That will be due on Friday.

Tomorrow we will begin chapter 6

Thank you

Extra Credit: Sumerian City-State

An extra credit option the students can do is to create a model of what a Sumerian city-state looked like.  They can create a 3-d model using household or store bought materials.  They can also use a computer program to create the city-state (see the videos in the previous post).

They city-state should include everything that we have talked about in class (e.g., irrigation system, walls, moats, farmland, ziggurat, King’s palace, houses, etc…).

There will not be a rubric on this, but basically all I am looking for is the work ethic.  The more work students put in, the more extra credit points they will receive.  I leave it to your imagination!!

Again, this is extra credit, so they don’t have to do this.  However, it could be a great project for students to work on.  I really look forward to seeing what students will come up with.

Deadline for this will be due before the week after Thanksgiving break, on December 5th

Thank you
