Today we went over the study guide for chapter 20 and reviewed for the assessment that they will take tomorrow.

They will need to know the questions on the study guide, the geographic features on the map of China (Huang He, Chang Jiang, Plateau of Tibet, South China Sea, etc…) and the vocabulary from chapter 20.

Here is the study guide:

ch 20 study guide

Homework from the processing was due today, so any absent students need to turn that in.

I will also check their reading notes tomorrow for chapter 20.

I have asked the leadership students to put up the vocab on quizlet, and hopefully they will put it up by tonight.  I apologize for the long wait.

Thank you

CHAPTER 20 ASSESSMENT ON THURSDAY!

Today we discussed what would be on the assessment.  We went over the map of China, and I passed out the study guide.

ch 20 study guide

The map of China and features needed to know for the test (e.g. Huang He, Gobi Desert, East China Sea, Kunlun Mtns…) are found in these reading notes ON PAGES 1 AND 2!!

ch 19reading notes

We also watched a humorous video that another teacher made about ancient China.  The beginning part is what we studied, but I thought it was an interesting video to share.  (just FYI, Fu Hao in the video was a Shang Queen whose tomb was discovered in Anyang)

HOMEWORK:

Processing assignment is due tomorrow.  Students will find that in their chapter 20 reading notes under section 9.

Study for test!

March 9th, 2015

Today in class we went over the notes from chapter 20 about the Shang dynasty.  Whoever was absent today needs to make sure they have all of the notes completed on their own.

Homework:
Students will complete the ‘Processing’ part from their reading notes.  It is on page 6, under section 9:

ch 20 reading notes

Using a sheet of loose leaf paper, students will ‘create’ a museum exhibition about the Shang Dynasty.  They need to choose one characteristic of a civilization (art, technology, religion, writing, etc…) and choose 3 artifacts that belong to that characteristic.  They will label them and explain how the artifacts relate to the characteristic.  It should be colorful and look presentable.  Follow the directions on the processing!!  Look online for ideas of how museum exhibits look.  Again, ONLY USE LOOSE LEAF PAPER!  No 3-D models or large chart paper.

Here are some of the artifacts we looked at in class to help students with their drawings.  They could also use ideas from the book as well:

Homework is due on Wednesday!!

CHAPTER 20 ASSESSMENT WILL BE ON THURSDAY
Tomorrow I will give a study guide.  They will also need to identify features on a map of China, like the Huang He, Plateau of Tibet, Gobi desert, etc.  I will pass back their homework of the map of China tomorrow (if they did it).

Thank you

March 5th, 2015

Today in class we started with chapter 20: The Shang Dynasty.  Students acted as “archaeologists” and ‘excavated’ and analyzed different artifacts found from the Shang Dynasty of ancient China.

As they were looking at different artifacts, they would read certain sections in the book and complete the reading notes for that section.  Here are the reading notes for Chapter 20:

ch 20 reading notes

The map of ancient China was also due today (see yesterday’s post).

No homework besides any late work that can be turned in.

We will continue with the “excavation” activity tomorrow.

Feb. 27th, 2015

Friday is finally here!

I was absent yesterday, so the students watched a video on Islam with the sub.

Today we prepared for the World Religions assessment that we will take on Monday!  I helped students prepare for their writing piece that they have to do for the assessment as well, which is a short 3 paragraph, compare/contrast, writing assignment.

Here is what I expect for the writing portion on the test on Monday.  Along with this is an example of what I am looking for in an introduction:

compare contrast 3p essay

Monday will be a closed note test.  It will contain two parts, 1.) 20 multiple choice questions regarding their notes and 2.) 3 paragraph writing piece.  Students can prepare their essays beforehand, but cannot use anything on the test.

Today I also check their notes with all 5 religions and the map.  Here, again, are all the powerpoints for each religion, and the sheet/map for the notes:

5 Major World Religions table-map

Hinduism

judaism

Buddhism

Christianity

Islam

Also, here is the video that sums up all 5 religions very briefly.  We watched it today to review and help for writing the paragraphs:

All Extra Credit will be due on Monday!!

Feb. 25th, 2015

Yesterday we finished with Christianity and started with Islam.

Today we finished Islam.  Here are the powerpoints to go along with each religion:

Christianity

Islam

Friday we will have our assessment on the 5 major world religions!!

The test will consist of about 20 multiple choice questions, and then a short, 3 paragraph compare/contrast essay.  Students will compare and contrast 2 religions of their choice.

Tomorrow we will work on the essays in class to help prepare them for the assessment.
Also, this will be a closed note assessment with no study guide.  Students need to study their chart of each religion as well as the notes they copied down from class.  It WILL NOT be easy!  They need to study!!

Extra Credit Option:

Here are two more chapters that students can do for extra credit.  They need to read these chapters and just fill in the corresponding reading notes (they do not need to do the preview and processing).  These are for chapters 36 and 37, about Christianity

ch 36 origins christianity reading notes

ch 37 christianity reading notes

ALL EXTRA CREDIT WILL BE DUE ON FRIDAY!!

Unfortunately there are no chapters in the textbook on Islam.  The company who makes the textbook does have 2 chapters devoted to Islam, however it is only found on their online subscription, which we don’t have.

Thank you
