Dec 2nd, 2015

Today in class we finished up Unit 1, which was chapters 1-6.  We watched a couple videos that kind of reviewed what we have talked about in class the past few months, and then we worked on a timeline with questions.  This was turned in during class today.

EXTRA CREDIT

The extra credit is due by the end of the week.  Many students have already brought in models and showed me their minecraft game.  So far there has been some great stuff that I have seen.  Here is the rubric for the extra credit:

Hope everyone had a good break!

Yesterday and today in class we talked about the Code of Hammurabi.  These were an ancient form of laws from the Babylonian Empire in Mesopotamia that showed laws broken and punishments given.  These laws are seen as quite barbaric by today’s standards, but they did help King Hammurabi unify his Empire.

Students will have to do a poster project about the Code of Hammurabi.  Today I explain to them what the project will be.  Attached is a sheet that has ALL of the information needed for the project.  They must get their own poster, and it needs to be 12×18 in.  If you have a poster larger than that, then measure out the length and cut it.  This will be due Wednesday Dec. 9th.  Attached is the assignment information, rubric, and overview reading sheet along with the actual code of laws.

Extra Credit is due by end of this week!  I have already had some students turn in their projects.

Nov 24th, 2015

Yesterday and today in class we worked on Chapter 6, and each group was assigned one of the 4 empires of Mesopotamia.  They did their reading notes for the specific empire, and then as a group created a poster describing their empire.  Today they finished their posters.  This was an in-class project.

EXTRA CREDIT DUE DATE CHANGED TO DECEMBER 3RD

The extra credit assignment for creating a Sumerian city-state will be due now on Thursday Dec. 3rd, not the 4th.  Please see me earlier post about what they can do for their city state.  Also, Mrs. Jones and I have created a rubric to follow for their city-state, so we know that they created it and didn’t copy it from someone else (mainly from using the Minecraft game).  Again, this is extra credit, you don’t have to do it.  It will go on the 2nd card marking:

Here is the rubric:

Other than that, NO HOMEWORK!

Have a great and restful Thanksgiving!!

Today in class we began chapter 6.  Groups were assigned 1 of the 4 empires we will learn about from ancient Mesopotamia (Akkadian, Babylonian, Assyrian, and Neo-Babylonian Empires).  They read the sections about their empire and completed the notes for those sections.  On Monday they will create a poster displaying information about their empire.

Here are the reading notes (they only did two sections I assigned them)

Chapter 6 illustrated dictionary is due on Monday, not tomorrow!!

EXTRA CREDIT OPTION

Students can make a Sumerian city-state by either making a 3-D model of it or by creating it on the video game Minecraft or by another computer program.  They need to include all aspects of a city-state which we learned about.  This will be around 30 extra credit points.  They may work with a group of up to 4, in any of my classes or even Mrs. Jones’ class as well.  This will be due the week after Thanksgiving.

This is a link of a city-state video that a group of students did last year:

Here is another one, not done by one of my students, but one I found online:

The processing assignment at the end of the reading notes will be due on Thursday.  Students need to find images in magazines or newspapers to find “artifacts” of today’s society to show that we are today also a civilization.  Again the processing is at the END of the reading notes.  They will do it on a separate sheet of paper.

HOMEWORK:
1.  Complete reading notes, due tomorrow
2.  Processing due Thursday

I NEED MAGAZINES FOR TOMORROW!  Sorry for the late notice, but whoever reads this, I forgot to mention this in class today, I need magazines (any kind, school appropriate) for class tomorrow.   Make sure they are magazines you don’t want, because we will be cutting them out!

Friday and today in class students worked on their chapter 5 reading notes with a partner.  They worked through the chapter and all the sections by reading the section, completing the notes for that section, viewing artifacts around the room, list all artifacts that show evidence of that characteristic of civilization, have the teacher check their section notes, and then continue on with the next section.  Whatever they didn’t finish in their notes, they need to complete on their own from now on.  Here are the reading notes for chapter 5:

ch 5 reading notes

Here are the pictures of the Sumerian artifacts they need to complete:

ch5 artifacts

Each picture is of an actual artifact archaeologists found in the area of Sumer, these date back to 3-5,000 years ago.  They will use them to show evidence of the 7 characteristics of a civilization.

HOMEWORK:
1.  BRING MAGAZINES (if you can)!
2.  Finish the reading notes by Wednesday

Thank you

Today in class we worked on sections 2 and 3.  Students who were absent need to read those sections and complete the notes.  Here are the reading notes for chapter 5:

ch 5 reading notes

Students will be working on a Sumerian Artifact Activity where they will look at different characteristics of a civilization, use actual artifacts from ancient Sumer, and decide which artifacts show evidence of that particular characteristic.  They will work with a partner, at their own pace, to complete the rest of the notes and decide which artifacts go with what section.   This will all be class work.

NO HOMEWORK!

Thank you
