Today in class we are working on the Chapter 5 assessment.  This is a summative grade worth 10 points…so it MUST be completed.

Please look at the LAST page in the reading notes under “Processing.”  That explains the assignment:

Basically students will use magazines to find modern artifacts that show evidence of each characteristic of civilization (technology, religion, government, etc…).  They will choose 1 picture for each characteristic, then they will write a sentence explaining their reasoning.  Here is the sentence stem:

(Name of artifact) relates to this characteristic of civilization because… 

For example (if a student has a picture of drums for The Arts):  The drums relate to this characteristic of civilization because they are being used to bring joy to others and to entertain them with beautiful music.

This is DUE tomorrow!

Reading notes were checked today!  Any absent students need to get them checked.  ALso they turned in their open-book, take-home quiz.

Tomorrow we will finish up chapter 5 and I will explain the extra credit option more in detail.

Bring in magazines- extra credit

Today we continued with chapter 5: Ancient Sumer.  We talked about the 7 characteristics of a civilization and we will be figuring out was the area of ancient Sumer a civilization.  Students will be using actual artifacts from Sumer to determine the evidence of those 7 characteristics.   Over the next 2 days they will be working with their partners to complete the rest of the chapter reading and notes.  Today we have read sections 1-3, and completed sections 2-3 in the notes.

Today their chapter 5 illustrated dictionaries were due.  Students can still turn this in.

I NEED MAGAZINES!

Today students received back their chapter 3 assessments (3 paragraphs or comic strip).  They have the option to do a re-do.  They can fix their mistakes and get a couple more points added to their grade.  The re-dos will be due on Friday!!  This is also optional, they do not need to do this.

Processing Assignment:
At the end of their reading notes, there is the directions for the processing assignment.  They will create, on a loose leaf or computer paper, a “real-estate advertisement” for a Sumerian city-state.  The processing will give all the directions needed.  This will be due on Monday!
Students had most of today and will have some of tomorrow to work on it in class.

Chapter 4 Assessment is on Wednesday!
Tomorrow they will get their study guides and be able to work on it most of class.
